Hi watto1,
Looking at the pic- on the left side base plate front corner, just below the mounting bolt/stud there will be a series of numbers stamped. They could be any of the following-

1403, 1404 = 5oo cfm
1400, 1405, 14054, 1406, 14064 = 600cfm
1407, 1411 = 750cfm

By what I can see it has an electric choke and the engine looks like a 289, so I'd take a stab and say it's a either a 1403, 1400, 1406 or a 1411. For a 289 it should be a 1403- 500cfm. If you use a 1403 with a Performer manifold on a 289 it'll have plenty of power and pretty good fuel economy
Hope this helps!
Cheers-
Layne

It's an Edelbrock Performer, they are made by Carter in the US, work pretty much the same as a QuadraJet except they are a square bore. Very good carb as they use metering rods controled by vacuum like a Qjet

ok it is a 1406 so 600 cfm..

runs pretty well, I am having a little trouble getting the mix right, plus the idle speed right - i got caught the other day in port melbourne, took the family for a drive and when we got back it started ok, I had it running for a while with the air con on, 5 mins later when I put it in drive it stalled, then the battery was dead??? never had any trouble before- I finally got someone to jump start me, and it did the same thing (i was parked in a tricky little spot) - next time someone jumped me i turned the idle right up straight away, and almost did a line locker coming out of the park!! - I didnt want to stall it again so I kept the revs up high.
It is currently still idling fairly high - will that damage the transmission?

You can down load a user guide from the Edelbrock Web site, very comprehensive.

I have the same carby... and I am having a problem with the choke cable... the old one died, so I put a replacement wire one on, only it bent after two or three pull/release ...so I bought a braided one, and that did the same.

Am I missing something, or are these choke cables a pain in the arse ?

Any ideas on a good quality cable ???

Thanks.
