Extractor installation
« on: November 05, 2015, 08:53:48 am »
Hi. I have a 67 fastback mustang with a 390 fe.
Currently the engine is in but the c6 is not. The question is do I install the trans first then try get the long tube headers in or headers first then try the trans?
Cheers

So I'm under the impression that the trans goes in first then extractors. Prick of a job but can be done?
Can the engine, trans and extractors be removed/installed as one unit?

get some 12 point header bolts.

find someone that is stupid enough to help you.

install trans.

put front of car on jackstands.

undo the two long engine mount bolts.

put a 2 x 4 on top of a floor jack then place it under the oil pan so you can jack up the engine as necessary.

put some white grease or moly grease or anti seize on the bolt threads

get a step stool and a case of FOSTERS LAGER . . AUSTRALIAS FAVORITE BEER and procede.

I'm not going to tell you its a easy job because its NOT . The C 6 is a big gear box and without a bolt on bell housing .  If you fitted the headers 1st I doubt  the box would fit thought the pipes .  It might pay to do a test fit for the pipes without the box just to make sure they fit every were else ? . Extractors in mustangs are hard enough but talk big block and its a nightmare .  Are the headers tuned length interference type or collector type .

The extractors are jba 4-2-1 with collectors.
Supposedly made for my gt 390 heads with power steering.

Fit the box then try and fit the pipes . You will have to lift the engine to fit them and its not going to be easy and take quite a effort so don't give up .  Buy the 3/8 headed extractor bolts not the 7/16 headed ones ,will make life a bit easier .

all the 12 points i have ever seen were 3/8 which is another reason i suggested them . . i'm so glad its him and not me that gets to enjoy this experience.

Big blocks in mustangs with the std towers is just not on . Then fitting headers I would rather get a tooth pulled .

I put and fitted extractors on my last 70 Mach 1 with a 351C  and that was hard enough .  The engine bays are just to narrow between the towers are the rails . They need to be as wide as XD falcons .

Staddy that's because they were custom made pipes ,most of the shelf pipes are bad fitting .

Yep Glenn I nearly went the hooker headers route but they looked , how can I say , to straight  , and of course rhd was going to make fitting them a lot of fun . so custom it was .
