Who Has The Oldest Mustang Fastback
« on: June 25, 2015, 06:57:14 pm »
Since I raised the question as to the oldest Mustang in Australia ( winner being a blue vert, then a 260 Cub in coupe then my 289 D Code Coupe), who has the oldest fastback in Australia.

I believe that the fastback commenced production on 14 August 1964. So who out there is a contender?

My '641/2 D Code coupe was built on the 15th April 1964, 2 days before the first mustang was officially released. Oops, sorry, I just realised you said fastback. I'll just go back to watching M.A.S.H. :ouch:

That's OK Steve. That makes yours probably the 4th oldest Mustang. But the 2nd oldest D Code Coupe. Mine has a build date of 13 April 1964, never stored, always driven and one owner before me. It was all original, however when it was driven, many materials were at the end of their life and I used all NOS replacement parts as available. She still has mostly a 51 year old paint job

My fastback was built New Years eve 1964. No longer own her but Misty went to a good home. Had a lot of 64 parts in her which made it a bit interesting during restoration. I was the second owner .

New Years Eve 1964?. Even before production started on Coupes and Convertibles.

Should not have sold it.

Most websites give 2+2 Production starting in early September 1964.

Managed to ask Bob Fria, the Mustang Historian who owns 100002, a pre production Coupe, during the Mustang Madness show at the Peterson Museum during the 50 Celebrations, if this was correct and he believed it was the 9th September 1964.

Mustangs and Fords Magazine did a poll on finding the earliest 2+2 or Fastback a few years ago and the earliest they could find was the 26th September.

In 1995 I purchased a Fastback from the late Dick Cruise's Widow (The Baker Collection) with the build date 17J, the 17th of September 1964.

I first found the car and met Dick in 1982, but he would not sell it. we then became friends and I must have asked him many times for it over the following thirteen years, but couldn't prise it from him.

On his passing in 1995, his wife said it was mine and that Dick was evently going to give in and  let me have it.

Still have it.

Fast forward to December 2013, looking for something to do Mustangs Across America and the 50th Celebrations in Charlotte in 2014, I was put on to a another Fastback in Southern California.

Bought it, did the trip and it now resides in North Queensland,

It's build date 14J, the 14 th of September 1964.

Built three days apart and 18 years  between purchases.

Just recently I have found out of a 9J build Fastback, the 9th of September 1964 which is about to be fully restored here in Queensland,

If the production start date is correct, this is a day ONE car.

Mere attrition, I put the question out about the oldest Mustang on 3 October 2014 on this forum. To date there have only been two cars older than mine, but mine is the most original. Thus I'm willing to step down from No 3 if there is one built before 13 April 1964. But no one has bettered the original unmolested and unrestored survivor condition. No rust whatsoever was a bonus as well as all documents and verification from when it was picked up by the original owner (she is 93 years old now and still kicking) to now.

I probably should have said NYE 1965 as the build date was 31 / 12 / 64. My mistake. I will now stand in the corner.

Check out this OLDE 1963 no fastback but..........
Fifty years ago,1963, Ford photographers were capturing this styling prototype on film. The new car was still known at Ford as the "Special Falcon," but also notice the Cougar grille emblem. The Mustang name would not be chosen for several more months.........Thanks Shermatt

Look at the grill - that is no 'running pony' - it is a top secret prototype too (in May 1963)

Have to love the cheese cutter tyres of the day. They were brave people who drove them like that.I have a vague recollection of the handling characteristics of a cross ply tyre and if memory serves me correctly it was all bad.

So there are no takers out there, who consider owning some or THE earliest 65 Fastback?
