Importing my first mustang

Hi,

My mach 1 is on the way to me from LA to Brisbane. Who would people recommend to use in Bris for (1) customs broker and (2) to certify the car once here to get it on the road?  Thanks a lot in advance. Adam.

Hi mate ,so your mustang is already on the ship and on its way ? .   So you have your import approval already . Who is the shipper . What year is your mustang Mach 1 as it makes a difference to get on the road , seat belts etc .  You may only need to change the head lights and a normal RWC . You shipper should be able to Handel the customs side of things .

With a '72 there is going to be a reasonable amount of work in terms of ADR compliance so you will probably need an engineer as well as a roadworthy guy .  I'm sure the QLD guys will jump in with recommendations.

Thanks. Yep sorry about the late reply. It's a 72 Mach 1. Shipping with Schumachers (who have basically said they don't do anything with customs at this end - nice). Yep got all the import approvals etc.

Hey when you say change the headlights do you mean swap left over to right or do you mean change to a completely new set?

US headlights are designed so that when you dip the high beam to low it throws to the right
Aus headlights have to dip to the left
So you will need to replace the US units with Aus ones

My car was shipped with Schumaker ( Joey Smit was my point of contact there )
Had no issues with them - the car was shipped promptly
Car was landed in Sydney ( I Used Freight net international )

Both companies provided me with excellent service

A couple of other things to consider -
GST payments on the vehicle
this is based on what customs think the car is worth in Aust dollars - not always the same price as you paid

other expenses - AQIS - supposedly for steam cleaning the car
some other minor costs that I can't remember the details for.

I think my total outlay here was approx $ 4,000

Good luck with the engineer side of this - My engineers report bill was approx $2,500.
that did not include any work.
I had to find a good mechanic for rectification/ compliance work - That was additional expense

I think my total bill to get my 1970 on the road with full rego was approx $6,000

So all up once it was landed in Sydney it cost me another $10,000 to get it on the road

Thanks guys. Am hoping it ships relatively soon. Am aware of the gst and aqis costs. Gst should be based on fact not some market assumption.

Am hoping someone knows someone here in Brisbane who can get me a cheap compliance deal. I understand the laws have relaxed here on seat belts etc.  it's a 72 so it has belts etc. hope it's just the light I have to change.

stops people using dummy prices to get a car in cheaper and paying less GST.

The $2000 bill was just for engineering testing and compliancing.
If I just had to change the lights it would still have cost me the same price.

Think a 72 has to have the belts done still .  David Walsh on the south side ( spring wood area) does a nice job .mob 0411 311473  .he does the lot belts ,lights and plate . Just tell him Glenn from the Gold Coast sent you .

Nope. That's too subjective. It's based on the purchase price plus shipping and costs, the exchange rate etc. Always has been.

It's based on the cost of the car in USD ,then that is converted to AUD  and they then do there own valuation ,which is always a little more  ,then the GST on that price ,then shipping ,cleaning , customs ,etcetera .

I imported may car last November using EDI International as the local Customs brokers.  The purchase price I paid for the car was accepted as the Customs valuation without question and I didn't have to pay any additional charges for things like steam cleaning, etc.

I think it may vary depending on who your Customs agent is and even which port the car lands in...

That's exactly right BAC. Talk about separate valuations etc are just furphies and people shouldn't be concerned about them. It simply doesn't happen and if anybody is concerned about that they should check with Customs or a broker to get the info first hand.
