I am contemplating mounting a trans cooler in the inner guard somewhere on my 65 but not exactly sure the best spot just curious where you guys mounted and how correctly and certain brands if any are better than others.
Cheers Ray

It depends what you need it for . . obviously the bigger it is the better it cools but the harder it is to find a place to mount it . . you can mount the one below on the front cross brace in front to the radiator if you don't have ac.

if your trans runs really hot, you can run your engine temp at 180 then run the trans thru the radiator first if yours has a cooler then out to the cooler . . this is another way to get away with a small cooler.

also, if you really want to cool it will, i would also add a higher capacity finned aluminum trans pan.

ok, well the only place would be in the trunk or inside the wheel well in front if the tire which means it will be small and subject to rocks and dirt so it will need a screen and will be a pita to mount.

Do a google image search for "Nassi extra oil cooler" and follow the first image to the link. Not sure if that particular setup has been used for a trans cooler before but might be an option.

.
if this is the one it is very a bad idea . . no access if it leaks or the fan dies plus it needs at least 25 mm of air space behind it otherwise the air does not flow thru it.

.
FYI - the id of the lines for the cooler don't need to be any larger than the lines in the trans which is about 5/16.

you can also use stainless flex lines.

Sorry might be hijacking this thread a little Azza but has anyone noticed Barnett468 seems to take over every tech thread.He/her first appeared here in January this year and seems to be or professes to be the guru of all things mechanical and Mustang.Thinking must be a thousand years old and the son of Da Vinci.

Just a question but why do you need a trans cooler ? . Good idea but if you have a good radiator with the trans cooler lines it might be enough .  A cooler is great for towing and if you race the car or if it has a high stall converter .  If the radiator is for an auto still run the lines but also you can run a small cooler anywhere and that will help .

It will be ok in the front wheel arch but angle it down to catch air. Most Rods have them under the floor up in the chassis, on an angle, work fine.

Yep using a 3200 stall, I have painted behind the grill and engine bay all silver now and don't like the look of the cooler being visible, think I'll get a small one with fan I'll make it fit under there.

the one i posted is a pretty small one and one much smaller wouldn't be very effective .. as far as a fan goes i would calculate the area of the fans before buying any . . i can do this later for you . . you might be better off with 2 small fans than one bigger one . . also, most chinese and korean fans do not flow anywhere near the amount of air they claim . . i would by good fans like spals and buy the highest cfm i can . . if you dont buy spals you can buy ones that have the biggest amp draw . . i would also run the pan i mentioned in your case.

I am on your side dyates.....I find barnett468 posts pretty irritating. I have no more room on this forum with my 40 years of experience with US muscle cars.
Over and out.....

Well I disagree, I find barnett468 posts most informative. He takes the trouble to answer, in detail, the sort of queries that many of us DIY owners either have, or with our aging cars are likely to run up against.
Then it's up to me if I decide whether to run with his advice, or not.
How can you knock someone who gives up his time for free? No-one is forcing you to read his, or anyone else's, input.
There are a number of regulars & their input is all appreciated by me at least.

Am hearing you 67 FBGT,
Barnett 468, Shaunp , Glenn 70 and a few others are the main reason I'm on this forum. There's no substitute for experience . A question is asked and an answer is given, and usually a good one. Keep up the good work fellas

Thank you 67FBGT and Juanball . . I too think GLENN and shaunp's posts are always helpful as well as boofhead's and many others . .  People got the help they needed long before I joined and I certainly don't know [or remember] it all after sniffing gas, solvent and paint fumes for the last 40 plus years, lol.

I find the most helpful posts are those that simply stick to the topic or encourage others . . I have never seen a benefit to discouraging or discrediting others.

As far as fans go, it would be best to use two 5 1/4 inch fans on the cooler I posted . . Spall has them in both pusher and puller style with a true 313 cfm . . Derale has some also . . You can also get coolers that have the fittings in the end which might make mounting a bit easier in your case if you mount it vertically.

ok, xlnt, even though i have absolutely what any of that means cuz i'm a yank, lol.

i'm guessing that by "guard" you mean fender and you have it off the car right now?

and "squizz" means you will look at the area and measure how much room you have?

i'm not even close?

Hello 67FBGT:

Nope not from the south but started north east [Michigan near Detroit] and ended up south west… So Calif, but I know all “foreigners” call everyone in the US a "yank", lol.

I'm not much of one for filling out profiles about myself…makes me feel like I'm tryin to impress people even though I'm not all that "impressive" but I’ll gladly answer any questions you might have if you pm me…I don't want to clutter Ray's thread with posts about how great I am.

OMG..."The Great Barnett"...please stop...you're killin me.
