2001 MUSTANG WITH 4.6L ENGINE - OPINIONS
« on: January 10, 2015, 06:55:46 pm »
Hi All, I am new to Mustangs (even though been a mad fan for decades (now 54) and I am thinking of purchasing my first Stang. Even though I love all the models I am thinking on a 2001 Model with the SVT 4.6L with 32 valves etc. I have read about the change in blocks etc which caused cooling issues on one bank of the engine (6,7,8 cyl) and was a recall back in the days. Wife would prefer the air cond and power steering et. But that is not important :)
My question is, what are peoples opinions on this model? It is a manual and has 118,000 kms. Matching numbers. Bought from USA in 2003 and converted to right hand drive by Ford when it arrived. The owner has had it since 2003. They state they have had no issues. Very original and matching numbers.
Any opinions is appreciated. The price $24,000 (Convertible too).
I have some time as I am selling my Four Winns boat to finance this.
Cheers
Steve -  Sydney

Giffo - about time you joined the forum! My Uncle has had three of theses and a few members on here still do (stormin comes to mind). They are a good car in general, though have a tendency to go through clutch cables. All Cobras are manual, you will need to get a GT if you want auto (irrelevant for you I know).

That one from Coffs had damage to the other side and needed some work.

Thanks Dave, That I did not now. Was wondering why they were all manuals. I am going to have a look at one on the 18th while on my way to Castle Hill for the All American day. You going?
Catch up soon.

We have one and love it. We've had it about 18 months and done around 10000ks in it. Comfortable but with the sports suspension it does ride a bit hard on rough roads. All Cobras are manual and the clutch is a bit heavy as they are a performance vehicle.  Goes like the wind although quite economical on fuel for a performance V8. Better than any of my other stangs. First convertible I've had where the bride will let the top down. Had not heard of any clutch cables breaking but they are about 2.4 m long . Its a car that corners well and the wife won't notice how hard you hit the corners as you just don't move around in the seats. Mine should be at Castle hill next Sunday.

I've had mine since new - has done a LOT of KM's as it's my daily driver. I had the drivetrain swapped out (by ICE's Performance in Melbourne - stunning effort John!) with the one in my avatar a while back - this is the one that has the cooling issue on the left hand cylinder bank, the head gets hot after switching them off and the valve guide has a habit of dropping, causing a 'tick' at idle. I had the cooling mod done to mine (easy peasy) and I haven't had that issue - but the original Aluminium V8's didn't have that trouble, and I gave my one a beating for 10 years and it was still very quiet and didn't use any oil.

So, in the 175,000 kms I had the original drive train, NOTHING went wrong other than the clutch cable. I have had about 5 of them (repaired again and again and again) as I have a spare, although this one has lasted a couple of years, and I think I was to blame for the original failures and it was a snowballing thing. Up until last year I had replaced one brake light bulb and one rego plate bulb, really reliable. Parts are REALLY cheap if you buy them from the US, avoid being robbed blind when buying from a local dealer. The one upgrade I would recommend would be to splash out on is a replacement key-fob remote control. The original ones have very limited range and you have to be on top of the car for it to work, these operate from 20-30 meters away and work EVERY time. Well worth it, and very easy to re-program (let me know if you get them and I'll give you the instructions).

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-2003-2004-2005-2006-Mustang-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-CASE-V110-SOZ-/151505427882?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item23466d5daa

The leather bolsters on the seats wear quite a lot, and they are hyper-expensive to replace in Australia, but can be obtained VERY cheaply in the US (they are the passenger seat there of course) and all you need is an upholsterer and you're back in perfect business.

Great car - get after-market 18/19 inch wheels, lower it a tad and WHEY HEY - cool car!!

What about the size for room? I am 6 foot plus and about 92 kgs. Is there plenty of leg and head room? I have long legs!!
Any pics of yours?

You are right about the range of the remotes. i think I will order a couple of those better ones. The seat covers are quite a reasonable
price in the states. The seat backs do tend to wear where you slide into the car.
Had the top down this arvo in the sunshine. brilliant. Got a few jealous looks as well.

Yup, about 6 3 and I'm trying to get down to 92kgs....
Main thing is, ensure you can get the clutch in all the way, that dictates your driving position. Be aware that they're VERY agricultural to drive - not smooth and refined like a Falcon or Commodore or European car, so be prepared to experience '80s architecture in 2000's wrapping - however, it IS endearing and makes for a very involved experience.
Here's the boomer:

Currently is has the 2003 bonnet and side scoops and repro 2000 Cobra R 18 inch wheels, the 2003 S/C motor & 6 speed, ecu.fuel tank etc plus 3 inch exhaust and hi-flo cats etc. It's a bit too damn loud and drones like a bastard at 1,800 rpm, but then it does make about 430 rwhp and is reasonably quick.
I'm going to put on 2003 front & rear bumpers soon and a 2003 interior, but I'm not in a great hurry as I drive the thing every day and will do until the end of the year when I will be looking for a daily driver replacement and then I can use this more infrequently.....

Got ya on that! Where is the pic?

What about parts. Plenty in Australia and readily available? Also what mechanics are there in Sydney that can work on the motors? I imagine Ford would not be well versed on them?

They have that much grunt you don't need to tickle them up and of the 1/2 dozen I know of no one has had to touch them. They are a hand built motor not a production line one.
Plenty of adjustment in the powered seat.I'm only 5'6" and I'm not sitting on the steering wheel to depress the clutch.

Well, parts are available in Oz, although a lot of stuff has now gone UA as they only bought in limited spares. As a car, it shouldn't need much in the way of work, just maintenance. The motors are very similar in architecture to the Boss 260/290/302/315 so Ford will know what they do and why, but mostly anything you need is cheaper and more readily available in the US.
For instance, my radiator grew a hole last year, and as it's a bigger rad (2003) due to the motor swap - they don't stock them here. A local repair/recore was quoted at $900 here (highway robbery) and a brand new (aftermarket) replacement was $175 from a catalogue outfit in the US and postage was $125 - so $300 and it was here in 4 days...

Don't let the parts availability dissuade you, they're rock-solid reliable.

Giffo, you know me. I'm only a little fella at 6'2" and 110kg and I get in them fine. We have not owned one, but have had one "on loan" for a few months once. We even threw the kidlets in the back seat and not too squishy as long as they are under 12 or so.

What price would it be for this 2001 Mustang Cobra, 118,000 kms, manual, all normal features. Good condition. How much do you think its worth?

Bit of a worry that the rear tyre is flat!!
What colour is the interior?
Looks nice, the mileage is not too high and it doesn't look too abused.
Check the bolsters on the seats for wear, but I'd imagine low 20's would be a good price for you although the buyer is likely to want more....

Sorry for being vague, what is a bolster? Guess the part of the seat you lean against?  :ouch: Grey interior.
Car has 118,000 kms. Pretty straight, although I reckon it was in a small acco in the rear near side corner. Had a look at the reinforcement and inside boot. All looks good.
He has offered it to me for 20k.
Nice exhaust. Will get it checked out first anyway.

It's the sides of the top-half of the drivers seat that stick out and support your ribs/kidneys - they're in the bottom of this photo:

$20K is a good price - check for a complete service history. No surprise that it's had a bingle at some stage, not unusual for a 12 year old car.
