GT40's
« on: December 05, 2014, 04:50:07 pm »
I know a guy selling some GT40's and I'm wondering if there would be any issues I should be aware of if I replaced my stock heads with these on my 302 windsor?

If they are GT40 that's ok but not GT40P the plugs are at a different angle and need special headers. These were originally from Explorers, some Oz falcon had them, ok heads.

Yes they are GT40's and definitely not GT40p.

I assume you have an early block;
So you
1) you loose your adjustable rocker gear, so you may need to find alternate push rods to get to correct length for hydraulic lifter preload to be correct.
2) will need to drill the steam holes into the block (or heads) as the later engines had revised water passages,
3) You may need to use different bolts for some of accessories that bolt to the head. Some of the thread sizes have changed over time.

Otherwise, it is a straight forward swap.

BTW: As stated make sure they are GT40 heads and not the GT40p as the spark plug angle was changed and this can cause problems with traditional exhaust systems.

Maybe I'm better off putting some roller rockers, etc on existing heads instead of GT40's?

No  , problems with that are the rocker studs  once you fit the cam and fit the valve springs and you rev it a bit they can pull . The later GT40 heads maybe a problem also with non adjustable rocker gear with the new cam . The problem with doing performance up grades is its one thing after another to make every thing work together ,just ask shelby mustro (Ryan) on here .

Aren't you in Sydney?

Yeah Penrith. I'm only interested in the heads. I've bought an edelbrock rpm, i have a 600 holley and decent valve covers.

The heads sold today! Unbelievable! I might be getting the carby. I might just go for it and buy http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Racing-GT-40-Cylinder-Head-M-6049-X306-/191410701509?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c90f784c5.

I did buy this - Edelbrock 1407 carburetor 4 barrel 750cfm

It wont be stock when I'm finished with it. And I plan on putting it on all at once:

1) Edelbrock 1407 carburetor 4 barrel 750cfm
2) Edelbrock performance rpm intake
3) Aloy heads (not sure which ones yet)
4) COMP Cams SK63-246-4 High Energy 268H Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshaft Small Kit (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/400301085267)
5) Patriot Shorties (extractors)  (already on)
6) Elec dizzy (already on)

Will go better with a smaller carby . I run a 650 on my 347 and might go a little better with a 750 (maybe) at the drags at over 5700 rpm . Seems ok and it has the 650 Holley ,RPM  dual plain intake ,alloy heads ,hyd roller cam but is a 347 . I do loose a bit in the top end because of the dual plain intake . 113.8 mph in the 400m with 205 x 14 tyres .

I've got the 600 holley on it now. So I'll test them both out and sell whatever performs the worst with that set up.

If you use the gt40 heads you  can buy pedestal roller rocker , you buy a shim kit , some come with them to adjust  the valve lash, you still need to get the correct push rod length.  I may have some roller tip 1.7 rockers that may fit you current heads.

Have a look at the Holley carby size calculator (Google it).  And I always go a bit bigger for the track . People will say mine goes good with a 750 on a stock 302  ,but they really don't know .

Yeah my research is telling me that your advice (and others) is that the 750 is too big. I'm not even going to bother trying it. I'll leave the 600 Holley on. Thanks for the tip!
