fastback sits too high
« on: December 03, 2007, 06:54:50 pm »
probably been discussed before so sorry if thats true,my newly restored, unregd fastback seems to sit way too high (front 660mm & rear 705mm both from floor to wheel arch). I have had the leafs reset and am using the original coils, will it settle as I drive the car to wheel aligners and mechanics ?(on a permit of course !) motor reg department say no lowering so I may have a problem, any thoughts?.

Hi Phill, I used a local spring manufacturer here in SA to make me new  U bolts whilst they reset my springs, I had my old shackles which I used as a reference and they measured 90mm from bolt centre too bolt centre  , so thats what I purchased from a supplier thinking they were correct, I still have probably 4 threads to go on the U bolts before I runout of them to pull up the plate ! but dam there tight, I will add I have new KYB gas adjusts all round ! maybe thats half my problem !

4 wheel drives are becoming very fashionable now. Maybe you could leave it as is?:+

It will settle a bit but I really can't see it coming down that much. Fit a set of 1" lowered springs in the front (I used  a set of "GT" springs from M.O.M) & get the rears re-set again. I'd be surprised if the spring shop even charge you. The mob that did my rears assured me that if I'm not happy with the height, I should bring them back for resetting.

I wouldn't worry about the "no lowering" policy. That sounds like a load of crap. If the car is roadworthy it can be registered. Ask them what height your 65-66 Mustang is supposed to be. I bet they'll change the subject real quick!!

Good luck.

Evan.

P.S. If 1" drop front springs don't drop the car as much as you'd like, try dropping the upper control arms 1" (Shelby drop).

I would not worry about the no lowering rego thing. I am from SA and my 66 is lowered at the front ( a little too much ) and regency never said a word. Back is standard height ( not as high as yours ) but I would like to lower it a little. You could lower yours a lot and I am sure no one would say anything. Look at the height of others driving around. They are not as high as yours. Good luck.

I fitted the 1" lower springs to my F/B and only dropped 10mm.
Mags such as M&F will tell you that the shorter springs have a higher compression rate so will not drop that much.
Shelby drop is the way to go which I will get around to one day.

That will work.  If you do not go too low, no one will say a word.  Do not think that the back will drop. I use to leave mine sitting with a full tank of fuel waiting for it to drop. 15 years on I am still waiting.  Come to a Zipple cruise and see what height others are.

thanks showpony,I have been to see spring bloke and he pulled the file up (2005) it said before they started on them it was 7 3/8 and they were reset at 8 inch which his book told him for a 66 ,what does this mean!  I asked him what height difference it would make and he said  a change of 20 mm higher ! I have kyb gas adjusts, could these be my problem !

Did they add an extra leaf for stiffening? That will make it sit higher. If so they should've compenstaed.
Did they offer to fix the mistake?

I suppose you should leave it alone for now, get it registered & let it "rest" for a couple of weeks. Then you should go back to them & get them to reset according to the height you want. Hopefully they won't charge full price again. If they do, go elsewhere.

Evan.
