15 X 8 on 65 mustang
« on: July 19, 2014, 04:48:14 pm »
Hi guys just wondering if any one has had any issues with rubbing with 15 x 8 steel styled wheels on the early cars... I'm looking at buying a set off a guy I'm pretty sure with the tyres are 225 x 50 BF Goodrich on all four rims.

My other car is a Mustang ( ok I lied this one cost me enough)

I won't run 8s on the front ,and depending on the offset you can run 8 on the rear .what year mustang .

well my mates at CJ pony say this

The 15" x 7" wheel is not recommended for use on the front of 1965-1966 Mustangs, as they do not have enough clearance from the factory for a 7" wheel in most cases. A 5" or 6" wide wheel is a safer alternative and generally recommended for the front.

The 15" x 8" wheel is only recommended for use on the rear of 1967-1973 Mustangs. It is not recommended for use on the rear of 1965-1966 Mustangs, as they do not have enough clearance from the factory for a 8" wheel without extensive modifications.

oh well looks like I wont be buying these then ....bummmer although the guy said they are off his 66 mustang

8s on the rear on a 65/66 are a tight fit 7s are fine ,and 7s on the front are fine .

Only 8's I've seen on front of 65/6 mustangs was a 17x8 style steel or Shelby style rims.  But the tyre was a 215 to clear front suspension

I have 15x7 fronts with 205 60's and 15x8 with 215 60 rears on my '66 but the vehicle is not lowered. Both have 4.5" b/s. Guards aren't rolled.

I have had  20x8.5 on all 4 once  :thumb:  on me 66

but its a different ball game to using 15's... I had zero bulge on 20's !

was gonna get convo's and 15 x 7's were the biggest I could run on me rear, with big rubber

Mine has 8s on the rear with 235/60x15 ,guards rolled and no more room .8 s on the front are very hard on front wheel bearings and can make these old car track .

Guess what 15 X 8 do fit easily...no issues anywhere.. I didn't need to roll the guards they sit in with no clearance issues anywhere they fit perfectly even that my car is slightly lowered... the guy I bought these off was a gem he said they would fit.. he had these ordered from the states from Drake with a 5 inch backspace..a thin spacer is used on the front to clear the top ball joint. A spacer is not needed for the rears. It has BF tyres 225/50 directional series tyres. It doesn't seem to be tracking so all good ...happy camper

I have 15x225 Style Steel rims on the front and back of my 67 no problem.
Mum's 66 has 15x225 American Racing rims on the back and 15x215 on the front, it's lowered a lot, they tend to rub the front guards around tighter corners but in a straight line they're fine.

I must admit I was skeptical they wouldn't fit everything Ive heard and read they shouldn't fit on 65s/66s I think 67 and up never had an issue with these.

My 8s on the rear of my 66 fit ok with 235/60x15 but not much room between the tyre and the springs .I just don't like 8s on the front .Your looks good I must admit . :thumb:

thanks Glenn..I was thinking maybe 8s on the front might be to wide myself but they sit in nicely.. and they could go wider at the rear like yours but for now I'm content to just leave it that's after the whitewalls are done :)...I was tossing up whether to get 17" show spoke chrome rims or Centrelines or even Convo pros but its also the wife's car she loved the hub caps (must admit i do as well) so I compromised lol...shes happy..and happy wife happy life :)

looks good, but I am personally not a fan of spacers to achieve correct offset.

I could get away with out the spacer but its close to the top ball joint ...if I changed the front to a 215 it wouldn't be an issue or a 205 / 65

Mach one ,you did say you have 8s on the front ,if so a 225 would be about the smallest tyre on a 8 .

Greetings all, this is my first post but I've been skulking around in here for a couple years. Great source of info.

I'm chasing a source for a pair of 15 X 8 inch styled steel wheels with charcoal inserts for the rear of my 66 coupe. My car has 15 X 7 Scott Drake wheels currently but I'd like to fill the space under the rear guards with some 8's.  Drake don't make anything above 15 X 7's and I've tried a few mustang part places in Melbourne without any joy.

4.5 or 4.75 back space should fit with my BFG 225's according to my measurements and the sound advice on here. CJ Pony Parts sell an 8 inch rim but it's inserts are the bronze color as opposed to charcoal. Would prefer not to have to have to re-paint them

Any advice much appreciated

Cheers Adam

Ring Ajax  wheels in Moorabbin,
Take your car there, they'll take measurements,
Go home take off your wheels and give em to em!!

Thank me later!!

The only way to definitively say those will not hit is to remove one front spring then jack the wheel up 50 mm at a time and turn the wheel from lock to lock st each interval.

i bet you will find that they will hit.
