What colour - 1971 2 door hardtop (notchback)
« on: May 18, 2014, 11:13:36 am »
Started a bit over a year ago and now ready for paint.
When I bought the car it was dark green (photo attached). Original colour was yellow (Ford code M3470-A) and that's what I was going to do - keep it original.
But I've already changed the wheels/tyres, replaced the standard hood with a vented one (boss style) and upgraded the 302 to 347. Later will be brake and suspension upgrade and now I am thinking about changing the grabber yellow to a different yellow. My intentions of staying original have slipped sideways.
In the attached photo the car in center is the sort of yellow I had chosen, but now thinking of changing to the yellow on the right or something like it - more wow. It's a good photo to show the difference side by side.
But if it's not 100% original is it even worth staying with the yellow at all. Maybe I should widen my range?
Found this website is a good link for paint examples. http://paintref.com/paintref/index.shtml
Gotta make a decision this week, times slipping.

The 2015 Mustang triple yellow looks good but depends on whether you like yellow. As you have made some changes already that takes it away from original anyway you should go with a colour you like.

The following are photos of a yellow and black coupe taken during the nationals. The car looks shyte hot in my opinion -

The car is from Tasmania. If the owner is on this Forum I say Well Done!!! :thumb:

Nice :thumb:
The big rims look great. I've gone for 17" rims with black spokes.
And blacked out all the chrome trim (polished alloy window surrounds, door handles, fuel cap, etc). I was going with satin black instead of gloss for the hood.
Front and rear bumper will be same yellow and take the yellow all the way down - leave out the black along the bottom.
Gut feeling tells me to stay with the yellow and black theme.

Dont go to much yellow ,it needs some chrome to break it up .If not it might look like a big banana thats over ripe with some black spots on it . :lmao:

Just remember satin black is hard to keep clean if it's large area, you can't polish it, I've done a few Falcon GT's over the years, with bonnets like this, some of them ended up getting a coat of gloss clear because they drove the owners crazy. You' wouldn't  use satin black now days you would use black base and Matte clear, not sure if cleans any better.

If you want to do it green like a Bullet, the easiest colour match in a modern colour for Highland green is Range Rover Ardennes green.

Yellow and black it is - decision made.
Yellow will be original grabber yellow.
Black will be satin with gloss clear over the top.
When I purchased the car, the previous owner said he had it for 10 years and he bought it from the guy who did the LHD to RHD conversion. I don't know how they got it registered as the conversion was crap.
After sand blasting, we exposed the RHD conversion hatchet job under the filler and paint.
Engine bay is now repaired and had it's first coat of satin black. Engineer is happy with the LHD to RHD conversion now it is fixed up.
Blasting and stripping all the panels exposed old accidents and repairs at front, rear, left and right side. It had a hard life ! Lucky it was 99% rust free under all that green and yellow paint.
I wasn't interested in repairing and body filling the old panels. I wanted original steel.
Out of USA we bought new panels for rear L & R quarter, hood and boot. Couldn't get door skins so bought new doors. What the hell, it needed a birthday !

Yellow sounds good ,but i would do the black outs in gloss ,then you can just polish the whole car without getting polish on the satin or matt black area .I still would go chrome where its meant to be .Sit it low with a nice set of wheels and stay old school looking wheels .What year was it again ,if 73 then colour code the front bar if you want .

Yellow will be original grabber yellow.

Good choice but with this car I don't think you can go wrong, it'll still look good regardless.

Also I think it's a better selling point if you intend to sell, it won't be that hard for the next owner to make it closer to original if the paint is still in good nick.

The yellow 72 coupe was built by Snow Bennett a long time member of MOCA Qld .Snow passed away a couple of years ago but his car lives on, he spent a lot of time and money getting it to be a gold medal winner. Good onya Snow, we still think of you mate..

It was converted from Left to Right about 15 years ago. It just wasn't done very well.
It will remain RHD but now complies and will pass engineers inspection.

A bit more progress.
Interesting how the different angle (of light reflection) makes the yellow look more or less pale.
Yep - looks like a banana at the moment, but still got the black to go on.
