"Shorty" Headers
« on: May 02, 2014, 12:29:42 pm »
Looking for some advise.

I have a 65 Fastback, 289, LHD, the lowest point of my car is the headers that I have which are Hooker, would changing over to a set of "shorty" headers fix my clearance issue? The flange that bolts to the exhaust pipe is about 3-4 inches from the ground, can anyone recommend a good set o shorty headers?

Cheers.

Yes the flange ends up in the bay. JBA are about the best.

i had long tube headers on mine and they hung way to low, dragged on just about anything to the point of me avoiding sloping driveways and small speed humps even.
so ill recommend my Hedman Elite shorty headers. ceramic coated with bell mouth flanges similar to JBA. fitted easily and dropped them in from top.
i got them from summit while in US for sema'12. cost me $179!!! brilliant quality for ridiculously cheap price. JBA's will set you back 3x that. so check out freight cost.
when a 3 month engine rebuild turns into 3 year bare metal resto.
you get that .....

Pretty sure they don't ship here, I've just bought a set whilst I was over there and had to post them back.
About $110 in postage.
They cost me $760 for the heat coated shorties (351W - 65 Coupe)
Hope this helps.

huh?  how come you didnt bring them back as luggage????
i had them delivered to my hotel (which summit do for free in US btw) and marched straight thru LA and sydney with the box tucked under my arm, thats the beauty of buying gear over there.
i think you got dudded somehow. :thud:
and summit absolutely ship here as many others will attest.

I had clearance issues to the point that it was preventing Rego in ACT.

I Bought some Hedman Headers - shortys and it solved the problem.

I bought from Summit and they certainly do ship to Aust...$99 shipping if I recall correctly.

The installer said that they were much easier to install than the JBA and they clear all spark plugs better than some others as well...certainly no plug access problems.

Thanks for the advice, how much work is involved to modify the existing exhaust to fit the shorty headers?  Summit has the hedman elite shorty for $448 delivered to Oz

Hedman Elite are nice quality, I've got some RHD 4-1 long tubes for my car. They come with the connector for your exhaust bloke to use when he makes the front pipes to join them up to your existing exhaust. You'll need to get your current pipes extended.

I have JBA on mine - bought them direct from them and brought them back from the USA in an extra bag... thanks to Virgin and my excessive flying didn't get any extra charge.

I have also found that a set of Shelby Tri Y's would be a good option.

The short answer we had too much to bring back already, spend the $100 on another suitcase to put them in plus excess baggage - easier to post them.
They were here in 6 days - before I got home.
You pick up a lot of extra baggage after a month away  :bolt:
Next time I won't take the missus so there will be plenty of room for parts.

Cheers

I've gone the Dougs Ceramic coated 1 3/4" shorty/tri's on my 408 stroker. Very happy with the quality, fitment etc. Still to start the car though

Are they the ones they say fit RHD? if so they work ok, they are still pretty close to the steering box they are also only 1 1/2" primaries.
Hedman make a nice set which give much more room, are ceramic coated & 1 5/8 primaries. You can Only get them from Sydney mustang supplies, they get them custom made in the US about $750 I seem to remember, they are the go.

I have long tube RHD pacemakers on my '68 and have no dramas and love the richer exhaust note.

Thanks Fellas i'll try to fit them after the Shannons Extravaganza in case i get into trouble i just love a good note and keep the others with the bigger primaries for when i upgrade to a stroker, i feel more confident without having to reinvent the wheel.

You'll need to lift the motor to get them in.

Shaun fitted them in nicely without having to lift the motor just removed the plugs on drivers side used a mates two poster hoist and a mechanic friend.PS the bolt on the right hand side rear was a challenge but it was woth it as it now sounds real sweet.

I have the Try Y's. No prob with clearance issues. Already fitted when I purchased. Replaced gaskets not long ago. Easy to remove and same for the refit.
