8 inch diff to suit a 65 - Gold Coast
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:24:29 am »
I'm after an 8 inch diff to replace the 6 cyl one currently in my 65 Coupe.

Doesn't need to be LSD, just needs to be working and hopefully cheap  :smile01:

I'm expecting to replace the seals and bearings anyway.

Located on the Gold Coast, but can drive to pick one up.

Cheers
Scott

Definitely overkill for this car, although...  What ratio and what width ?

It's from a Lincoln Versailles, was in a 67 FB for a while, I'd reckon it would be about 3:1 but would have to check, I know they chuck these straight in 65 on Mustangs, but I think it may a bit wider then stock on a 65, particular a disc one, the disc's add a bit. From memory I think it is 57" wheel to wheel. would suit a V8 conversion.

They are a little wide for a 65/66 unless you run no offset on your rear wheels .Std is 57 1/4 inches on a 65/66 mustang  ,versailles are 58 1/2 inches ,but some are 58 inches depending on year .Perfect for 67 to 70 mustangs .800 dollars is a steal .

so would it go on a 66 with a V8 and a set of 17's with a 4 inch back space do you reckon? I asked Shaun about this a month or so ago and was waiting for him to advise... I've got what probably is an 8 inch diff with a 3.0 to 1 and not an lsd that I want to replace with a 9 inch lsd. what do you think Glenn will it work? and Shaun if it does would you sell it to me?

anfo99 ,the diff is wider than a 65/66 but only about 1 inch in total so that will be fine unless you have a deep dish wheel ,even a 7 inch with the wrong offset can be a problem with a wide tyre on it .Have a look at yours now and if you think you have that extra room and the cars not real low it will be ok .I have a 69 diff in my 66 and its too wide but i have no dish on my wheels so they just fit  . Later falcon and mustang rims have no offset and will fit but then the fronts sit in to much .You dont have much choice when fitting a factory 9 inch as they are near impossible to find that width 57 1/4 inches unless you get one made .Tank fairlanes late 50s and 65/66 K code mustangs are your only hope .

I had to use google maps to find out where young is Anfo. Your diff is pretty much what I'm after for my car, however you are a long way away.

I'll ring around the local diff shops and see that they have sitting around.  You never know, I might get lucky.

yeah I'm a long way from anywhere, I was thinking that shaunp had a diff that might fit my car and if it did I could drive up and swap or maybe I could pay shaun you could pick that diff and maybe meet at port macquarie of something... but I don't think shaunp's diff is going to fit

The other thing Anfo is that the Versailles diff will have large centres on the hubs, like falcons do from late XB, this maybe an issue with your wheels as well depending on the size of the centre hole. In the next couple of months I will be getting a car from Coffs Harbour to restore, the owner will be bringing it up on a trailer, maybe an opportunity to get the 9" closer to you, John has a 351 here as well he will be taking back with him which is for-sale, sure he would take the diff as far as Coffs.  Remember to as Glen said it's a bit wider, but it won't be an 1" each side it will be 1/2" each side.

I might be better off looking for an 8 inch lsd although I hear they are really rare?

If you have an  8" now you buy a new LSD unit for it for about $450 US from Summit. Gear sets are about $150, build kit about $100. Then you just need someone to build it for you.

My Car ? 8" I have a couple centres with different ratios, easy to swap as needed. I'm going build a new true track for my car probably in a 3.25 ratio to start with.

so far as I know it's a 3.0 to 1 standard diff. Jeez it's cheap to get an lsd centre from summit, the guy who is building my engine can build diffs so that is my problem solved thanks guys what champions you are

Also Shaun your diff is only a little wider than a stock 65/66 diff ,as you said about a 1/2 inch each side and should be about 58 inches compared to 57 1/4 .My 66 diff is 59 1/4 and its really to wide .800 dollars is a very deal .

Yep it's the way to go but make sure you get the correct bearing kit from them, the LSD/ truetrak what ever you will need larger carrier bearings, they specify this in the build kits.
