Welcome Novice ,for starters the 70s were only a sticker  on the door .If you want to just put it up here and we will sort it out for you .Make sure you do your homework before buying and have someone go look at it .

If you only have the VIN and not the rest of the door tag data which gives you colour, interior colour/trim, build date, ordering district, axle and transmission you can send your VIN to Marti Auto Works and they can give you the all the details.

If you are in a hurry they can do same day service via email, costs extra. All the details on the following link.

East coast car from Oregon I reckon it will be rusty, see if you can find a Cali built car, R will be the second digit in the vin,

Maybe talk to Boss craft see his add in the side bar, Sean will make sure you get a nice one or Matt from Shermat. The biggest drama is do not buy a rusty or full of bog one. Basic paint job will start from a about $12k for a very good straight rust free car and could run up to mid 30's easily to repair a crook one correctly, so get someone to look at it that really knows what it's about. There a lot of work in putting the right if they are bad

It is obvious by your questions that you are indeed a novice.
So if you find a car you like post it up here first before you do anything as there are a lot of people on here with a wealth of knowledge that can guide you. Believe me, it is a minefield out there and you can loose a lot of money very quickly if you buy the wrong car.
Good lick with your search.

Novice,
I think you should do a search for the post about Mustangpaul's convertible.
specifically you need to have a look at the photos he saw before he bought it and then what he received.
This will reinforce the message you are getting here about having the car looked at or even the photos as there are some eyes here that can spot every issue with these cars.
Its a bit hard to search for posts on this Window phone, especially while giving birth to a politician, but you should be able to find it.
its a long read, but it does have a happy ending.
Steve

Novice,
did you spot the body filler in the photo you posted of the Mach 1 front guard?
that was a rough repair.
what was their asking price?

Mornign All, Yes the Bog was noticed, a number of converstaion brought to my attention, with  cars of this age you need to expect a certain amount of body damage, i just took it to be as part of the restoration process, what i been to be concious of is how much rust is underneath.
The hunt continue, I will be sure to seek advice / recommendation from the panel on the forum

Yes and no, some west cost cars have a totally rust free or minimum rust in the body, My 67 has all the original panels including floors, It was from Santa Anna. Look for cars with R as the second letter of the vin and a DSO code of 71, they are LA delivered cars, normally very good for rust. Body work is about the biggest cost if the car is poor, cheaper to buy a really good body even the rest of the car is worn out, mechanical stuff is way cheaper to fix. I'm restoring another 67 fastback for one of the forum members at the moment again a Cali car again pretty rust free, still needed floors though and 1 door but the rest is solid. Steer clear of the snow belt cars they are a money pit to put right, as many around here can tell you.
