Top loader specs
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:51:31 pm »
I need some info on some top loader measurements if anyone has them or knows of a good reference.

I'm trying to find out exactly the input shaft length and bolt pattern from trans front to bell housing. I am hoping to fit an F-truck trans to a top loader bellhousing. From some info I can find, it should work. But am wanting to find out more before I place an order on a new bellhousing. I don't want to spend the money they are asking to not have it fit.

The specs I have on the F-truck 4 speed, NP435, are as follows.

The Ford NP435 has a 1-1/16" diameter, ten spline input shaft that has a stick-out of 6-1/2" from the front face of the transmission. The pilot tip of the transmission measures ~17mm. The front bearing retainer flange measures 4.85" and the bearing retainer tube is 1.43" in diameter. The front bolt pattern is the symmetrical Ford "butterfly" pattern; roughly 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall.

I have found info that says the "butterfly" pattern is the same as the Top Loader pattern but I just can't find the info to reassure this.

These measurements are from a small block one. Starting from the pilot tip. 0.675" dia x 1.15" long, 10 spline 1.050" dia input, bearing retainer 1.425" dia snout, the flange dia I forgot to measure doh! and the case holes are 8.5" across and 6.25" top to bottom approx. The input overall is 6.5" long.

Trust that helps.

That's very helpful, Skip. Looks like it will work. Great!

I appreciate you chasing that up for me. It's the last bit of info I need for the puzzle.

Thanks  :thumb:

Could you imagine that, a 6.68:1 granny 1st gear behind a 461ci FE. What kind of mess would that make?

I'm actually dropping a 5.4 3V into my F150. Finding which bellhousing to use hasn't been the easiest. Would be much easier if it were a 2x4 but she isn't so I need to keep the NP435 in it.
