Wiring redesign and upgrade
« on: November 16, 2013, 06:04:00 pm »
Hi all,

I decided to get my head stuck under the car this weekend and redo my wiring, as i had relays in unprotected areas of the car(front wheel arch).... nearly caused a massive headache :ouch:

So first things first i will be incorporating a fuse and relay box setup for low/high beam headlights, horn, thermo fans, hi6 elec ignition, elec water pump and safety light for the pump.

i have removed the wiring loom from the firewall forward, which had many wires not being used. I cant identify as yet 3 wires, but im still working on it.

My question is what wire size gauge to use particularly from relays to the accessories. i have spent many hours reading forums and suppliers information and really confused what to use in particularly the headlights. mostly the other accessories wires were supplied from the manufacturer.

Is it advisable to use 4mm supercheap/narva wire rated at 15 amps for low/high beam headlights.

some websites advise to use like 6mm equivalent wire, which i realy think its overkill and will end up in a very THICK loom.

What do you guys think??

Hi Pash,

6mm is too big

What headlights are you running?

4mm will give you around 15amps
Most decent headlights will need around 8amps, so 4mm is plenty.

If you want to go bigger
just get the 5mm from Narva, it will handle 25amps

page 238 of the Narva 2013-2014 catalogue
part number 5815
comes in 30 or 100 metre roll.

Just so you know what I did to my '66

I kept the original fuse box to run all the standard electrical in the car
and then ran a new Narva 54426 Blade Fuse box which comes with 2 inputs
I split the 2 inputs so you can have 2 circuits running

1 input- as always on (Live)
1 input- as switched with ignition/accessories using a relay

I then ran an 8 B&S wire from Narva catalogue number 5808M-30RD rated at 100amps
direct from the battery.

The new fuse box is in the console which I custom made
and accessible through the side panel

I also re-routed all the wiring in the engine bay through the inside of the guards so there are no wires in the engine bay.
Now it looks tidy.

All of my new accessories run from the new fuse box
and are switched differently depending on their need for example:

AO - means Always on
SO - means switched on with the accessories

SO - Retro Tacho
SO - Thermo Fan
SO - Electric Windows
AO - Rear Solenoid Boot Release
SO - 7inch DVD, GPS, Bluetooth, Digital TV player
AO - Memory for the DVD Player
AO - Air Horns
AO - Central locking, still need to install just haven't had time

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info Moz,

i ran into problems behind my dash after everything else was done, so i bought a AAW harness and going through installing that.

I just posted up a question on the conv wiring in a new thread, mainly about using a fused pwr source for the roof.

i hope it installs smoothly
