Water pump weep hole
« on: November 08, 2013, 06:23:15 pm »
I have an 8 month old cast water pump on my 289, just noticed that I am getting the odd drip of coolant from the hole on the underside of the pump.
What is this hole for and can I plug it?

Cheers
Ray

Get some bars leaks for your coolant. There are a few optional makers of this sort of stuff. If its just a std engine this will be fine.

Hello,
The hole is to allow water to drain when the mechanical seal is leaking.
Without the hole you would not know until the bearing failed.
The pump is on borrowed time.

Replace the water pump at your earliest possible convenience,a new water pump is cheaper than an engine rebuild after it is cooked

Years ago, I had a brand new pump leak from this hole (not a Mustang). I dropped a bottle of Wynns additive into the cooling system & it sorted it.

It is time for a new pump ,sometimes you will see a rust mark on the pump under the weep hole ,it may last a little while but you should replace it soon .When buying a new pump dont buy a cheap crappy one and make sure you get the right outlet side .

I did the same to my Muzzy with bars leak about 7 years ago. I do renew the fluid every 12 months but never a problem since. Should say it wasn't a weep hole leak though.
