C6 Auto
« on: September 17, 2013, 04:47:39 pm »
Hi I am looking for a C6 auto. I have one on my Cobra Jet which is not the correct one. That is not a big worry to me but a couple of the mounting lugs (at bell housing to block) are broken off and I don't know what condition it is in inside either. Need to know if there are any around to suit a big block and what I would have to pay for one before I start to put money into mine.
Cheers

Have a '69 or 70 (forget the VIN stamp on it) C6 with cast iron tail shaft... came off an FE/FT out of a running car, but would recommend a tear down and rebuild.

In Brisbane.  You sort shipping or pickup, I can get it on a shipping palette, tied down and wrapped.  Have a couple people sniffing around at it, $500 and its gone...

PGA-A3, D servo, cast with two seals, not rubber.  Originally column shift, but modified to suit the floor shift on the EXP mule.

Mid range servo, used on a lot of full size passenger cars and trucks.  Its a 9Uxxxxxx partial VIN.

Hi Glenn70,
Yes the lug that's broken is on the outer side and the one below it has been welded back on in the past. So it would appear it has had a bit of trauma in its life. Reading the info above it seems there are lots of differences in transmissions. Mine is not the ribbed type up on the bell housing area and it has a large no"1" sort of welded into it. It is an alloy rear housing which is 355mm long and it has an E servo. There are no other numbers on it only fomoco casting. I am not sure what it is off or if it will be good enough for the CJ. I have put it into the tranny shop to give it the once over to determine if it's worth progressing with or start again with another.

Servo is really kinda moot, if you are rebuilding (which this one probably needs) all you do is buy a new housing and servo and bolt it in...  Unless you are going concours correct.  You can machine some housings to suit, but for ~100-150 probably better off to just buy the kit.

Believe there were three basic styles, based on bellhousing, maybe some variants on cases.  3 or 4 different tailshaft lengths IIRC, some alloy, some cast iron.  Think most 60's-70's Mustangs used a 14" and there was one shorter an one longer.

Hi Mert,
Thanks for that info. I have been a bit lost with this. Not going concours just a good runner. Where am I likely to source a replacement housing? I can't seem to be able to track one down.

Ebay, many trans shops?  Here from me? :thumb:  Should not be extremely hard to find, but maybe not used a lot here in Oz and a bit more limited availability.

The C6 was used for about 30-ish years and if you get the proper bell housing and tailshaft they should all work for your application.  Even if you get a different tailshaft you can always get a custom driveshaft done up... a bit of cost, but easy to do for a shop.

The R servo has mythology around it as it was used in the 428CJ/SCJ equipped cars.  I am no expert but my limited understanding is the larger the servo, the firmer the shifts.  Basically a pressure valve that helps time shifts based on fluid pressure so same pressure and larger servo area equals faster/firmer shifts... at a basic level.

As noted any C6 housing can take pretty much any servo, just a consideration to look into when rebuilding.

hi
the cj r servo transmission was a special case it is the only case that will take a  factory r servo
it was machine differencly than all other c6 case
tubby if you are not going concourse i would buy merts and rebuild it
the cast iron tail is worth his price alone
cheers

Thanks to all.
Barry, I think that's good advice. I am waiting to get the verdict on mine today. After I know what I'm up for with mine I will be able to make a decision. Will keep you posted.

Hi Guys,
Transmission guy got back to me today. Guess what. It's all stuffed. Now call me a cynic but somehow I reconed this was going to be the case. Anyway I am now in the market for one. He says he can get one from SA with a guarantee that the pump etc is good but will still need some work. He wants $450 for it delivered to Geelong then whatever it takes to service/reco it. Mert, is yours still available?
Anyone know of any a bit closer to me?

Hi Cage,
If you could get what ever info you can would be good. Also does it come with torque converter and how much do you want for it? Are you in Vic?
Regards,
