Info on importing motorcycles from USA or UK
« on: September 02, 2013, 02:23:30 pm »
Looking for a 50s or 60s motorcycle. Prices seem a bit high in Aust. and most of them have been imported recently.

Was wondering if any has had some experience importing motorcycles

Looking at the best and cheepest way of getting my hands on one.

Any info please

+ 1 for talking to Matt Poorpiggi,

Not sure what you are lookin for but this caught my eye - not that I'm a bike rider these days but if I were this would suit me.

1967 Harley, Asking $21,500 USD ---- straight off from Matts Facebook page.

Importing a older bike is the same as importing a classic are ,just stay pre 89 if you dont want the compliance problems .Later will cost around 2500 dollars to comply on average ,and depends which state you are in .  I am thinking about bringing a harley in  soon ,a 2012 mod because i am going over to the usa next mth , and its 2500 to comply in qld ,and older models dont have the same laws to comply so costs are near nil .

A mate of mine purchased and imported a bike from this Netherlands dealer. He did not have any problems and is looking at bringing in another one. Some great old bikes on this site. I love the old Indians.

Thats the sort of bike I want. Very nice. Matchless, AJS, Squarefour. Came close to buying a 51 Matchless last week but not to be.

When I was about 13 dad brought home a 26 Harley with a spare engine. Sold it for $200 in the 80s. I nearly cryed.

Sold my speedmaster today.  Time for a project.

Bloody impressive list of bikes.

How did so many stunning bikes end up in the netherlands.

How did he go about bringing t it in from the dealer. Did he visit the netherlands or go through an importer.

He contacted the dealer and did the deal and it was shipped here to Adelaide. He said it ended up being easier than he thought as he had not done it before.

Dale

HOW COOL IS THAT??

That is going to look awesome mate. I love old bikes and that one ticks all the boxes

to say Im in shock, is an understatement....You have never mentioned this little baby before and I havent seen it , or known about it untill today. I am VERY Impressed mate.....also, very interested in knowing more about it and getting some pics. can ya hook a brother up and maybe post a few on facebook or even on here.

Poorpiggi

This is my bike. Its a 1948 Sunbeam S7 deluxe. Still has its first registration disc from 49 in the front fork. Its been featured in bike mags prior me owning it and was nicknamed "The ToonTown Twin"

I had 3 of these at one stage. Sorta got carried away as the one above was one of 412 on the world registry and there kind of an odd bike to come across. Ive learnt when Im riding it, to pull up and get off as quickly as possible and walk away from it rapidly as everyone over here is a bike nut and none of them have ever seen one.....ya soon feel like a broken record after doing a poker run or doing several stops

Heres a link to the 3rd one I sold a long time ago

https://www.facebook.com/shermatt.america/media_set?set=a.399588870067006.109232.100000476899783&type=1

I started out looking for an old 40's Indian with the big bucket style fenders (mud guards) and ended up with this. Its a 500cc inline twin shaft driven. In the day was known and advertised as the gentlemens motorcycle and most of them were sent to  India as police bikes. Ive been told that there are only 12 here in the US. The other 2 I had, I sold to a collector here in Clearwater FL.

I often search for old school bikes and only had an inquiry a few weeks ago about chasing down some old Harleys and triumphs from a fellow forum member. The are definitely a lot cheaper here and a lot cheaper to transport and ship

We only just bought a 2004 Harley fatboy the other day for a forum member and its here waiting for him when he comes over. Were heading off to biketoberfest in Daytona and then we'll organise shipping when he leaves....MAYBE...Its an awesome bike....Sheri will have a hard time parting with it. That one will need a compliance on it but if you stick under 89, you'll be ok

I come across them all the time, Matchless, BMW R26, BSA, Triumphs, Nortons, harleys...all that but I never really post them as its not something we specialize in. I used to have a contact that I would send bike inquiries to but his business ethics went out the door so we no longer refer him as it would reflect on us.

Believe it not, Shermatt International has only ever done one bike and only today I woke up to this email

Hi Matt & Sheri, howdy from Sydney.

Can you believe it has been 12 months since we first emailed about my bike!
Here’s a pic and a little thank you for your website...

..............................................................................................

I followed Shermatt for a year or two online as I was chasing a car from the US. In my electronic expedition, I got the bug to get another bike and so I emailed about a Harley Night Train, even though they specialise in Mustangs. Within no time at all, we got down to the best bike on paper and Matt & Sheri started the process. Because I had followed various forums for ages, I knew their reputation for honesty, character and delivering what they state was second to none. When you’re dealing with money, vehicles, and people overseas, you need to have trust in them. Well, they met with the vendor, negotiated hard on the price, sent me video of the actual transaction and exchange, plus about 50 photos and video. Any time I called, they picked up or called back. If you’re looking for Service in every sense of the word, you can’t go past Shermatt.

As of late, and the amount of requests we have been getting on bikes, we have been considering doing the older...more classic rides

I just did a quick search locally and found a bucket load of all of the above all around the $5k mark

Good luck with the hunt...let us know what ya end up with as I LOVE these old bikes. (Im sure Dale would appreciate it as well)

cheers mate  :thumb: ! My dad bought this bike when I was about 15, I am 50 next year. It was always my favourite of all the bikes dad had over the years so he gave it to me and I have been restoring it on and off for ten years now. I have ridden it loads of times over the years in Bay To Birdwoods runs etc it is great to ride. It is a 350 OHV Twin port single with a Burman Lightweight gearbox. All black with gold pinstriping on guards, rims and tank etc, so it will look great next to the car, what a fluke! I haven't touched it for a year or two , when I get a chance I will uncover it and take some pics for you. It is looking pretty good and as you can imagine I have it all correct and right as per original.

No pipes. Wish I did have. Can still buy them repoed, But I don't want to pay the 2 grand for a set. Thinking a nice 4/1 system as the mufflers are rooted. Just got to find some cheap
