'68 8' rear disc conversion
« on: July 21, 2013, 05:46:04 pm »
Hi everyone,

Looking to upgrade the rear drums on my '68 to discs. I have an 8' 3.00 rear axle. Can anyone tell me (or speculate with some degree of knowledge) if its a small or large bearing?

Anyone bought a kit like this one listed below? Any advice before I go ahead and chuck a grand into the wind and hope brakes show up on my door step eventually?

Thanks again,
Daniel

Looks OK to me. I notice they offer the option of paying by Paypal. That would be my choice as you have some recourse if they don't arrive or are not as advertised.

I'm positive this kit and others like it come with some pretty comprehensive fitting instructions. Every major kit I have bought off CJ Pony Parts is a piece of cake to work with. This kit would surprise me if its any different. I can scan the instructions for anyone that wants to see them when it arrives.

Thanks for you help Gents!

Rear discs really don't do much in an old Mustang.  With the nose heavy static weight distribution, the fronts do the vast majority of braking.  And with an 8" 3.00 it is not sounding like a real mega-Hp screamer.

I'd suggest considering putting the $ into other suspension/handling upgrades as you will probably not see a really big difference with the rear discs...

I know youre right Mert, I'm just rebuilding the whole rear axle and the cost to rebuild the old drums vs get new discs isnt far off and the serviceability appeals to me (and in my head I like the idea of seeing a disc in there).
No, not a screamer', only 300ish hp.

I bought the summit racing kit for ford 8 inch.  It turned out to be the SSBC kit for 1/2 the price!!!  To be honest I haven't noticed any difference in braking performance over drums.

The rear brakes are not a big problem, drums are fine unless you want the LOOK on the rears, and you have big wheels and you want to show off the rear discs .Up grade the fronts ,thats where your braking is important .But hey, if thats what you want to  do go for it . :smile01: ps, make sure your wheels will fit with the discs .

You can fit the wider shoes and drums on the rear if you want not much extra, New standard drums are about $70 each  shoes are just falcon about $38, 13/16 rear wheels cylinders are about $35 a pair.

You're paying $1000 to get rear drums serviced... ? F&*k me...  you should be able to do it for way less... someone is ripping you off on that quote. As Shaun notes you should be able to buy new everything for $200-300... and it ain't hard to install...
