Import Approval wait times
« on: June 18, 2013, 01:42:19 pm »
Hi ladies and gents,
Just wondering what the average wait times for import approval from canberra is? Am importing a 69 mach 1, and shermatt are organizing the shipping. Last time i imported in 2011 the wait was around 7-8 weeks.. I hope they are quicker now...

Took 2 months for a car I bought last February but I think most people were getting them in less time.

Its hard to say isn't it.. Hopefully its not too long a wait.. car should be ready to be shipped in about 2 weeks. Does that mean it can not leave the docks in LA until i have approval?
Or can you put it on a ship bound for Melbourne whilst waiting for approval?

At this time of year it wont take too long .Dont ship till you get the approval ,its much safer that way . You dont want the car here then put in bond ,trust me i know .

Put in bond? What does that mean? Will they fine you ? Put it in some ludicrously expensive storage aka a dingy warehouse and charge you?

I'm assuming you're using Schumacher, they will allow you to ship before receiving an import approval if you sign a disclaimer. Personally I wouldn't do it as you never know how long the plonkers will take to issue your permit.

dannyz ,bond is when your car gets here before it is approved or you have you import approval ,and they lock it away and charge you a daily rate ,even worse is when your container is held and they charge plenty every day ,trust me i know this one ,by the thousands  : cry:  and all they did was play a     :nopity:

Matt know his stuff and wouldn't start the shipping until he knows you have the Import Approval done.  Just sit back and wait, as the shipping takes longer than the approval..

I wouldn't want to risk it anyway for the sake of a few weeks. Should be soon anyway... Car is just sitting at schumachers now ready for the green light from Canberra...

Then when you get the green light they'll assign your car a container, then you'll have to wait till they fill the container that's set for your destination. It can take a while.

The wait is due to a transition in lodging of paper application to their new'ish electronic forms

EMAIL BELOW

Dear Vehicle Importer

The Department of Infrastructure and Transport will be changing its website on Wednesday 1 May 2013 to enable online applications for a Vehicle Import Approval.  Please find attached a letter that covers the introduction of the online form and the changes in applying for a Vehicle Import Approval, including transition arrangements for the acceptance of the current paper based application forms.

Regards,

Geoffrey Pitt
Director – Vehicle Imports

Looks like the wait may a bit longer as you mentioned.. Waiting for another car to fill the container to Melbourne... Hope its soon...

Although I had a long wait for approval, I got lucky with the container. I think mine was on the water 2 or 3 days after approval came through. Hopefully they fill it soon.
