My 1965 Factory GT Restoration
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:47:22 pm »
Hi all,

Thought I would start a thread on the restoration of my 1965 Mustang Factory GT a-code.
All original shell. No rust. Dry. Everything in tact. San Jose built may 1965.

She was originally Wimbledon White, with a blue interior but that's going to change.

Bare metal restoration. Ground up build. still needs further stripping and some body work, then will be primed and painted.

Ready for the tow truck to take it to the restorers:

The plan: Rebuilt 4v 289 Windsor with holly 600 carb, extractors. New twin exhaust to suit.
4 speed manual top loader gearbox. Power steering etc

Will be fitted with an entire new pony interior (see pics), new roof lining, dash, exterior painted candy apple red, all new chrome throughout (wherever required) and all factory GT trims and emblems. Polished American racing wheels

New Hood:

The end result I am after is this:

Exterior (without hood scoop)

Dash:

Seats:

carpets, roof lining, kicks panels in black also.

Let the fun begin, if all goes well, within 3 months I will be cruising in this beauty.  :burnout:

Here is an update (2 weeks into the project)

the whole car has been stripped, sand blasted, brakes and suspension rebuilt, painted in 2-pack candy apple red (not polished yet), dash and steering column in black 2-pack, black satin engine bay, under car has been sealed.

here are some pics:

does anyone have any experience with the RetroSound Model 2? im thinking about putting that one in with a set of kick panel moulded speakers. something basic to be suffice to listen to some tunes.

Its been a week since the last update so its time for another.

The crew (Dylan and Richard) over at US Classic Muscle Cars are doing an awesome job.

The car is being put back together - a lot of rewiring has been done, the dash is nearly together (the original knobs and heater controls came out like new when polished), the floor has been sound deadened, the seats are currently being reupholstered, a power booster for the front disc brakes and rear drums has been installed and a new fuel tank is in.

The engine rebuild will start next week and will be painted black and finished with an edelbrock dress up kit.  :evilone:
The only mods to the running gear will be extractors and a performance cam.

happy days...  :pepper:

here are some pics
