Water in trunk
« on: May 11, 2013, 07:55:24 pm »
Hey, I was looking to clean up the trunk area today of my 65 coupe however after a quick wash noticed water in the wells of the trunk. The left was worse as there are no drain holes. There was a steady trickle down the wheel arches into the wells. Is there a problem with the back window that is causing this? Anyone else come across this before? In the end the trunk will have to wait until I can sort out how water gets in the trunk.

Yeah mine does it every so often too. Doesn't stop me driving it though. If I get rained on, I just open the boot and lift the lining and let it dry.

I've stuck my head under there before and am not sure if it is the rubber seal on the rear glass or if it is from those little cracks in the body I have and have also seen on other 65/66 coupes that run along that seam from the rear glass corner to the trunk lid.

Thanks Ash, Since It will be kept in a garage not too concerned however would ideally love to reduce the the amount of water and damage as a result. Is it easy to remove the window frame?

I haven't done one on a 65/66 coupe so can't say for sure. But the one on my 69 fastback I cut out. The rubber was fit around the glass then siliconed/sikaflexed, what ever was used, into place. I wouldn't call it an afternoon task.

The back window's don't often get removed and therefore never re sealed.
If you remove the rear screen, cut the rubber to remove the glass.
Be prepared for some work once you get in there.

Lawny68, I hope mine is as easy as tightening a few screws. I think it will be more like what ANGZ66 has described. Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like the back window seal. I'd remove the 5 x fibreglass interior trim panels below the back window on the inside of the car, & take a close look at the body shell. Run some water over the back window & see if any comes through. Or you may see some telltale rust stains.
If so, the window has to come out, the body damage repaired, & window reinstalled with a nice new soft seal & sealant.

It should have holes in the front corner of the trunk wells to let the water out, from the factory they had a little rubber drain bung in them. All the above suggestions it likly how how it is getting in.

shaunp the right trunk well does have holes. The left one doesn't. Still, I don't think water should be running into the trunk and into the wells when I wash the car. I'd say the holes are there on the off chance water does get in. It makes it easier to drain.

That's true, but there should be one on each side, I'm geusing it's been covered buy a rust repair, but you do need to find the leak as well.

Yep I agree, probably during an old rust repair holes were closed up.

i talked to a smashy recently and he said that the rear windows leak, and it was common in the mustangs he recommended that the rear window seal be replaced.

Common problem with late model Falcons too. So don't feel too bad if your 40 something year old car has a bit of a drip.
