« on: April 12, 2013, 10:40:26 am »
Hi all,
I just want to know if anyone has done it and are they happy with the end result oh and who can do the repair and for how much approx?
as I'm not sure if its worth restoring or to just buy a repo,
any feed back would be great.

  Cheers.

Hey Thruster,

When I was considering restoring my woodgrain wheel I found a guy in NZ who wanted $600, I think I paid around that for a repro one.

Cheers

Thruster, I have read about somebody in Melbourne who can repair them. One of the Victorian guys will probably be along to advise who it is.

I bought a leather wrapped wheel from classicsteeingwheels in the UK. They supply Moto-Lita Wheels in wood or leather. Check out the following Link -

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MOTO-LITA-15-MK3-DISHED-COBRA-SLOT-WOODRIM-STEERING-WHEEL-FORD-MUSTANG-COBRA-/400455806750?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AMustang&hash=item5d3d06af1e

Excellent prices too!

But you would still need a Boss which can be supplied by various vendors in Australia ( Scott Drake unit ) or Mustangs Unlimited, or even Lecarra.

I believe Frank70 has been restoring some wood grain wheels, he may be interested in doing yours:

My wheel was bought from a forum member who had it restored in NZ, Rimblow Restorations I think it was. Wood grain is holding up very well but the rimblow horn switch seems to be getting a little loose and may need to be glued in soon. You could also keep your eye on eBay.

Hi Guys.

The ones I have restored are the rimblow ones. They are not real wood, but plastic with a wood-effect grain in it.
I just fill them and paint them to give a wood effect.  They are not really restored to the same quality as the professionally done ones.

Cheers,
Frank.

I have used Gary (rimblow restos in NZ) and he does good work.
I have a couple of his '69 wheels that are surplus to my needs if you're after that year specifically.

:thumb: for Gary. I looked at about 12 restorers of rim blow steering wheels here in Australia, USA & Canada. Gary did some for me and I think he does the best restoration. He even managed to repair one I had done here in Adelaide and one in Melbourne, both of those ended in heated discussion with those "restorers"

Thanks guys for all your responses,I have been given the opportunity to buy one with some cracks but I think it would be a better move to just buy a repo one,is there any I should be looking at and even more to the point is there brands I should avoid as I have been told that some repos are not well made ?

  Cheers John.

Based on the aussie dollar I would use these guys:

http://www.perogie.com/steeringwheels.htm

Excellent work and most likely will have a change over for your wheel in stock.
I bought a good core deluxe wheel and had it repaired, but wished I just bought a fully recoed unit from these guys.....

Cheers

Think carefully about restoring a genuine wood rim wheel. If the wood's cracked it's probably illegal to patch it up.

Genuine wood without cracks can be paint stripped to remove any clear lacquer, fine sanded and repainted in clear with UV inhibitor from a Cabot's type spray can. Mine came up a treat and hasn't degraded after 12 years of sun exposure.

The 69/70 wheels are not real wood, just wood-effect plastic
The core of the wheel is steel.
