Where is it now?
« on: March 22, 2013, 04:40:48 pm »
Hi,
I am trying to track down a 1965 FB that is a little unusual. It is a bit of a long shot but you never know.

I was talking to a friend who had this car in the 70's and I would like to see if it is still alive and maybe get some photos for him to see.

The car was owned by Carol Shelby, fitted with a 354, 8 throats in the carby with progressive throttle. Carol did one race in it as far as I am aware and sold it to the owner of Small's confectionery here in Australia (I think this is the correct name) and then sold to my friend. Unfortunately I have no idea of the VIN.

The car was vermilion orange in colour from the photos I have seen.

If anyone knows/knew of this vehicle I would love to hear from you

Small's used to make great chocolate but someone from Cadbury told me they've been swallowed by Nestle.   :omg:

So yet another  :flag: manufacturer bites the dust.

So presumably the owner of Small's confectionery visited Shelby in person in California, talked him into selling the fastback, & exported it to Australia.
So would the car have had to be converted to RHD once here? (Mid 60's).

Not sure about the RHD conversion, will find out.

As far as I know they were friends, again I will clarify and get what info I can.

I do know the car hit a kangaroo crossing the Nullabor while my mate had it.

Will try and get a copy of the photos, may jog some peoples memory.

Hitting a roo would cause a bit of strife. There might be a traceable insurance claim history.

Maybe the Customs Dept releases their records for access after 30 years. Can't be too many Shelby Mustangs imported say mid to late 60's. Duty and sales tax in the era was apparently around 97%, so you bought one car for the price of two.   :ouch:

It may have been Poppy Red, a Mustang colour that looked orangey in pics. The "8 throats in the carby" probably describes twin 4 barrel carbies, which were a common enough on race cars.

Shame your mate doesn't have a rego number. Peak motoring organisations have archived VIN/engine number records to trace older cars.

From my mates descripion the throttle plates were progressive, the more you planted the foot the more throats opened. May well have been 2 x 4 barrels but they were linked so they appeared as 4 x 2 barrels, Not sue what type of carbs they were but sounded interesting.

Apparently if you could keep your foot out of it  it gave good fuel mileage.

Have asked for more info and photos so will see what more I can discover.

I imagine that if it has survived it would be an awesome car.

I wouldn't rely on that 100%, not sure if they'd have it down as a Shelby. They're likely to have it listed as a Ford and possibly as a Mustang.  They don't even have my car down as a fastback and it was imported last year.

Also, we're talking the 60's, a friend has a mispelt surname due to a custom agent mispelling his dad's name back then.

Okay, this is all the info I have so methinks it may be a long shot to locate it.  :tissue:

Hi Greg,

After the altercation with the kangaroo and the repairs, it did not feel the same. I sold it in WA.and flew home. The conversion was done before I bought it. I did have the history paper trail for it but because I sold it to a dealer who was not up to date with anything other than the quick quid I now have no idea what I did with it. I sold it back in 1972, I think, so lots of water under the bridge. In those days there was not the interest there is today, no mustang club etc. the cost of cars of that ilk meant only those who had tax advantages would or could buy the big ticket type tax deductible    vehicle.

But you never know, it may still be out there.

Flick an email to the curator of the York Motor Museum in York WA. Not much of interest in WA hasn't passed through the hands of owner Peter B, such as a 427S/C Cobra, 300S Maserati, D Type Jag etc, all since sold. He's kept his WO Bentleys tho.  :thumb:

Sure it's a long shot after 40 years, but few other options in the locker.

Try contacting Graeme @ York Motor Musem, Avon Terrace, York, WA, 6302. Sorry, don't have the Museum's email and it would be unfair to publish his private email. Or try ringing the Musuem on 08 9641 1288.
