1 7/8 primary headers
« on: October 30, 2012, 05:53:15 pm »
Looking for a set of 1 7/8" headers to suit a 66 LHD Auto.  Anyone know if you can buy over the counter anywhere .... 1 5/8" are not big enough.

was going to build the exact same combo as you...stroked 9.5 deck 351 Dart to 427 cubes... found over the counter pipes to suit but was talked out of it coz it would have been a tight fit in a 66.... went for 8.2 deck Dart stroked to 363 cubes.... AFR 205's..... need at least 1 7/8" primary tube headers..... engine being assembeled next week....

says 289 onwards... I looked at these for mine, as I'm still running 1 5/8 primary shorties, and I need to modify the towers to make it fit.

As BLKPNY said Hedman Huslers. 1 3/4 stepped to 1 7/8 will work fine on your combo. That's what i run, with the 3 inch bolt spacing & 3 inch collectors. I bought mine through summit but you may be able to fine a local supplier. They may take up to 3 weeks to make plus a week to freight so get onto it soon. I did have the 1 3/4 hooker super comps and they aren't nearly as nice. Stick with Hedman Huslers. The ones i used had part number 85008.
My engine makes good power and torque with these headers (673hp on united 100 & 656hp on BP 98). Peak power @6800 & peak Tq @ 5200. On street tyres (and timing pulled out) it ran the eighth mile 6.7 @ 107mph with traction being an issue and driving off the line hence my 60ft times were ordinary. I should see high 9's on the quarter and 6.3's on the eighth with slicks.
They do need some mod's to the pipes when on the 9.5 inch deck block but not sure with the 8.2.

One other thing i have notched my towers but i retain all the original suspension set up. It was more for clearance so i can change plugs. I can take some photo's in a few days if that would help? And yes it is a tight fit with this size engine but in my eyes well worth it.

Hey Roo, I like the sounds of your combo, I really think my pipes are what is holding my combo back.
Mine is a baby 418 with stock Vic JR heads, and super victor manifold, and a small solid roller, but I think the 1 5/8 primary shorties will be the hold up.

Did those pipes fit well? Do you have pics of what you've done to the towers to make more room? I was planning on fitting coil overs, which are smaller diameter, to give me room to play with the towers.

My Hedmans - in the drivers back corner (LHD) goes up and over, and is real close to the master/booster, causing me a few problems, do you have that problem?

How low do they hang.  That's my second concern

being a slip on collector, it shouldn't be too bad on a 9.5" block, but will be about 1" lower on a short deck.

Have you considered custom made?

Pretty exxy for custom made, and no real guarantee's that it's better, or will be easier to fit.

If I was spending the money on the engine I'd do something custom. just my 2c.

I know of a guy in Brisbane that did work on my neighbours car, he said it was exxy but also a reasonable price (although more than off the shelf) and for full custom ceramic coated long tubes to suit your engine specs and/or the look you are after I'd say worth it!

Particularly with a previous car I ended up spending just as much $$ in chopping and changing a set of  Pacemakers to suit and it ended up looking just wrong!!!

Yeah.  Been there 4 times and done that.  It's a punt. Decisions. $700 over the counter or 2k plus for custom ...

The problem with custom, is there's no guarantee's.

They make them once, fitted, and they're done. They haven't tried getting them in and out, and tweaked them to make them easier to fit, nor do they test them, and tweak them to work better, after seeing results. Off the shelf pipes usually do.

Dunitrite66. Your 363 will be awesome. Don't under estimate your combo. With right cam those cubes & heads will see 10's.
blkpny. I will take some pics & post them for you. I still run the brake booster but I had to do a little bit of clearancing by tapping the pipes in a couple of spots. If u go coil overs you should get even more room. The only problem I have is on the passengers side (mine 66 is still LHD) the front pipe fouls the plug so I had to flatten / dent the pipe to allow the plug to go in. The other plugs on that side a mate made a tool up to do them up.

How low do yours hang or what is the gap from the ground approx.  I have seen other early stangs run high 10's with similar combos on 235/60 ET street radials.  I have set up Caltracs/Subframe connectors ... About to order 90/10 shocks for front ... Undecided on diff gears as I have just finished my 9 inch/ 31 spline package.. Radiator hasn't been finished yet and custom fuel tank being done to... Engine going together next week so should be on dyno by Friday week hopefully... If you can forward some pics would be appreciated. I need a set of pipes for dyno by next week either way.

Dunitrite66. You should be able to get better traction than a bigger cube motor because your torque should be more usable. I run slide a link bars with sub frame connectors. Your caltracks should be equal if not better. I dont like your chances of getting a set of headers in the next 2 weeks. Ask around as you should be able to borrow a set for your dyno session. What fuel pump or system are you using? What gearbox do you have (sorry if you already told us)?

Jaythefordman: The 427 fits but takes patience. If you were in WA you could come for a ride in mine to give you some idea what these things go like.

Now for posting photo's. Keeps saying file is to big

BLKPNY: The headers do take some clearencing ie. little dent or tap. Facing the engine the front left hand pipe doesn't let you put in the spark plug. If i new that before i put the motor in and pipes on  i would have modified that pipe. Having said that we just flattened the pipe just enough to allow the fitting of the plug and lead with a protective sock. I have no knocks or vibrations from the pipes as i ensured they didn't touch anything. Without a doubt your 418 would benefit from these headers. If you fit coil overs you would have more room to play with. Oh and yes the pipe that goes up around does just touch my brake booster so again i had to clearance this as well. Sounds like a bit of work and it is but i would do it again. The hooker super comps i had on the first combo (408 with afr205 heads, hyd roller) weren't in the same league.

Am away at work now, back home next wednesday, so perhaps I'll shoot you a message?

Gonzo pipes are great. I was told last week he is snowed under with work. No harm in trying I guess.
