What year is this 302
« on: October 23, 2012, 12:06:50 pm »
Hi, have just bought a '66 coupe and am replacing the 289 with a 302 due to the 289 requiring major surgery.
I have the 302 but unfortunately I can't access the block casting numbers as it is already fitted to the car but have located these numbers on the raised pad on the rear of the block on the drivers side (it is LHD)

4260 (heavy stamp)
FX335358 (these are very faint and located to the rear of the other number. The mechanic says the first number may be an 8 if that makes a difference)
Any help appreciated
Greg

'66 C code Coupe, Wimbledon White
Was 289 now 302

Of course I talk to myself, sometimes I need expert advice.

They dont look like a mustang stamp... I would have assumed that all early 302 blocks would be partial vin stamped, as 68 all blocks were stamped, which happens to be the first year they were available.

my guess is a later maybe 80's block? not sure when vin numbers changed format.

You're right, it is not a Mustang motor.
I think it is mid 80's or early 90's but am unsure.
The motor has been reconditioned and I suspect it is from a Falcon but it is all guesswork at the moment so any help appreciated

ok it should be a early aussie 302  from 1968 to 1970 in 1971 they changed water pump outlets to other side and radiator outlets . Early 68 usa was the same later 68 changed like here .So usa early 68 or aussie up to 70 .Does not make any difference as an engine just radiator outlets ,you cannot change water pumps over as balancer is marked different and timing marker on wrong side .

Thanks GLENN 70 for the reply.
Did forget to mention it is a 50oz balance, thus figured it was mid 80's or later but not sure when the 50oz came into production.

Should get the car back by Thursday, will be interested to feel the difference from the 289.

Hello. I believe up until 1980 they were 28oz externally

GLENN 70 Thanks for your help, will see if I can read the casting numbers, will hopefully narrow it down.
Unfortunately I don't know if it an Aussie or US motor but as I got it locally I'm guessing it is an Aussie motor, just wish I knew the full VIN, would make it easy
