'79 Pace Car gearbox options query
« on: July 15, 2012, 08:43:27 am »
Can anyone advise whether there is a later 5-speed Mustang gearbox that can be substituted for the original 4-speed? Am wanting a better spread of gears & overdrive 5th.
Hoping for a relatively simple bolt-in, not to alter the car itself in any way.
Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Is your pace car a 4cyl or V8?

I would imagine it would be pretty easy either way. SVO 4cyl's came with a T5 or any of the later FOX body bodies had T5's also.

I just recently sold a 5litre 1979 pace car and it had a 4spd Auto (AOD) behind it with very simple mods.

Good Luck

Thanks for your input, yes it's the 5L. Sounds like a T5 is the way to go, I'll research them as I want the same ratios as the 4-spd but with a 5th. Cheers. :thumb:

Someone at Bundoora Park last Sunday told me he had a T5 box for sale, but I was talking to so many chaps I cant remember who ! Come along to Mustang meeting on 19 September and ask the question if you need a T5. The gear ratios for the 302 V8 (5L) are excellent because 1st is low enough to give "rocket" accel. with regular slow start take off from stopped just using 2nd and not 1st. You need to be very straight to gun 1st with the T5, as the back will go out so quickly you can see it passing you !
Most road driving is in 4th with 5th being brilliant on the more open roads and of course highways/freeways. 100 kmh is about 1700 rpm in 5.

Cheers
