Windsor sandwich plate missing

Hi Guys,

I've spent the last few days removing the engine & gearbox from my 66 Mustang. It's a 289/302 with a C4 box , when i removed the 'box from the engine i noticed that the sandwich plate was missing. I also noticed that the flexplate has quite a few chewed teeth and a scraped-up balance block - i intend replacing the flexplate. Last time i saw a scraped balance block was from the starter gear touching the flexplate (different car but it had a sandwich plate). Anyway , what's the use of the sandwich plate? Is it for clearance between engine & 'box ? Do i really need one , and if so anyone got one?

You definatley need the sandwhich plate.

Without it the pump drive will be too far into the torque converter.

Last time i saw a chewed out balance block on an flex plate, we discovered the car had been fitted with a manual Starter motor.....was interesting to watch the sparks fly around the bell housing...you could also hear it!

As my balance block & ring gear is damaged it might be worth checking my starter , is there a way of telling whether i have a manual or auto starter by looking? I presume the starter gear is different?

The difference is only in the snub housing length.

The shaft, pinion etc are all the same!
