engine block painting
« on: February 01, 2012, 07:10:33 pm »
I'm looking into products to use to paint my block. I've found some helpful info searching here and other places and two brands keep popping up, POR15 and KBS.

So far I've found this engine painting kit by POR from the states - $51US plus $71US post. comes with:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/300524565541?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

    POR-15® SOLVENT
    MARINE CLEANTM
    METAL-READYTM
POR-15® (Black or Silver pending on Engine Enamel color choice)
ENGINE ENAMEL (color of your choice)
   Paint Brushes
    Safety face mask
    Latex surgical gloves

I haven't found a similar kit elsewhere, I have only found the KBS products sold seperately. For example 500ml enamel $49.90AU plus $10AU post:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ENGINE-ENAMEL-VELVET-BLACK-MOTORCOATER-HIGH-GLOSS-UP-232deg-500ml-/220882224515?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item336d9b4583

or

http://www.kbs-coatings.com.au/kbs-motorcoater-engine-enamel

To me it is looking like the POR15 kit is the pick off the two that I have found. Simply as the POR15 kit has everything required to do the job.

Does anybody have any other suggestions though?

you should be able to but those kits in sydney. I am using the same on a restoration we are doing. the company is PPC and their web is ppcco.com.au. check it out, they will send you a free restorers catalogue with all the details and a price list

Excellent, that's the kind of advice I was hoping for. Thank you!

I have just tried to fill out the request form but it must be down as it wouldn't submit. I'll make the call to them tomorrow for the catalogue.

Thanks :thumb:

Nice! Longevity seems to be a real big selling point with this product.

I can't remember back Hertz, did you paint the block in your FB?

That's right, I couldn't remember off the top of my head if you took the motor right out. I knew you had a fantastic starting point with your car, couldn't remember if you dismantled it that much during the build.

I read that both these products were complete self levelling, that makes things very easy to work with. I use a few products like that with timber work.

Hi Ash

Are you trying the reproduce the factory look, if so VHT have spray can pack which comes very close to the factory that I have used while the motor is still in the car.

Herman
Have now converted the other half into doing some of the Concours washin, cleaning & polishing stuff!!!!!!!!

Hi Herman,

No, wasn't going for an original look. Not much in my engine bay looks standard anyway. Was thinking black or dark blue.

Got some bad news today about my motor and am not sure what will happen from here. Need to do some more homework before I figure it out. 90% sure this block will stay. But at this point, painting it just took a step backwards.

Cheers :thumb:

Got the catalogue sent through to me this week. They have some great products in there. Thanks for suggesting them, it'll be very helpful! :thumb:

They told me of a few local stockists but all are still 50k's minimum from me. But they'll happily courier anything for roughly $18 they told me.

They don't do an engine kit though like the one on US ebay. You have to buy them all separately which adds up to much more. So I'll still go with that kit as for the price it is great for what you get.
