Sharing container to pay for shipping
« on: December 31, 2011, 12:09:47 pm »
I just got onto this forum last night. Seems a treasure trove of info!

My family and I moved to Aus. from the states in '06 and have since become citizens. I've owned a 1968 Mustang Coupe in the states since 2004 and I'm planning to bring it over in July, when we were planning to head back for a visit anyway.

I'd like to cover the shipping costs by buying a second Mustang and filling the extra space with some merchandise to sell on ebay here in Aus. Mostly Radio Flyer stuff. Does anyone have experience doing something similar? Due to a limited budget, the second car will have to be a C code or similar, nothing rare (unless I come upon a bargain). Around the USD8000 range probably. I expect I could sell said car here for AUD15000+

A couple examples I'm looking at:

http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/2748774186.html

I've found a shipper in an Aussie expat in Indianapolis, where I'm from originally, who will give me half of a 40ft. container to stack the two cars and the few boxes. I've budgeted $10,000 for shipping, duties, quarantine, etc. Cheetah imports is the shipping company.

All up, I expect to spend around $20,000 and just about break even when everything has sold.

Any advice, warnings or otherwise? I've already gleaned that I should register the title of the second car under my wife's name to save on taxes.

Hi n7n and welcome.

Just a comment on the personal import, you need to have owned the car for a year to qualify and avoid GST on import. Hence your 68 will be fine, but the second car, even in wife's name, will not qualify.

They made some classic old scooter/trike/bikes and older versions are quite collectable.
I rebuilt an old trike a couple of years back and made 200% on it.
I have also rebuilt a couple of Colson Trikes and sold one for over $400, bought it for $20!:rub:
