fuel filter location question
« on: November 26, 2011, 09:14:55 am »
hey guys ive got a question about fuel filters and where is the right place to fit them. Ive got 65 mustang and am running a 347 with a 750 DP its got a high volume edelbrock mechanical fuel pump and larger fuel line. I have just fitted one of the Earl in line filters just near the fuel tank .l was wondering with mechanical fuel pump is that location for the filter right or should it be after the pump another thing i noticed after fitting the filter the fuel pressue increased to 9psi any feed back would be great thanks guys

Robby, yes..you have it in the correct spot.

Its better to have fuel sucked through an in line filter rather than pumping pressure into it and and the chance of it rupturing.

Also make sure that the fuel pump has a cut off switch or you'll find if you have a line come detached or a leak (after a prang) and it continues to pump fuel then there is a likihood of a fire happening.

Better to have the fuel filter before the pump if possible, to keep the pump valves and carby clean. As you say, having it there also means it can't interfere with fuel pressure between the pump and carby.

On a standard early Mustang, an inline filter fits perfectly between the chassis and manual fuel pump.

Near the tank is OK, but remember to check when it needs replacing.
