Can a 71 mustang have red indicators?
A mate of mine recently got pulled over and got lots of
grief over red indicators.
The car has been in Australia for over 20 years and has had
heaps of roadworthys done with no hassles.
So my mate was given 2 choices
1: Change the Lenses
2: Do some research make sure its legal.

The ADR regarding amber rear indicators, came into effect 1973.... So unless state regs override ADR's, then it is OK.

I rang Vicroads last year to clarify certain things about getting a Roadworthy for a Mustang that doesn't have seatbelts
and do they have to have them.

The guy at Vicroads said that the rules are
whatever rules were in place when the vehicle rolled out of the factory in what ever year, then that is what is applicable to that vehicle.

For example: '66 no seat belt, don't quote me but I think '68 lap seat belts and then early '70's lap sach seat belts

So I said what happens when a policeman pulls you up for not wearing a seatbelt and tries to fine you on the spot?

He said what you do is you go to the Vicroads website and look up when certain rules came out like seatbelts, indicators etc:
and you print it out and when it happens you pull it out of your glove box and tell him to shove it and to learn the rules that apply,
and then you get back into your car and start laughing.  :smile01:

And they were his words, I was surprised

For your interest click on the link and scroll down the file to the last page and it is on the right

Enjoy

keeping the docs with you is a great idea although I beleive it to be a great shame that they are not either aware of the rules or choose to ignore them.

This is where being a car lover is confused with being a hoon.

I know that is not the issue here but I don't like that we are sometimes labled as hoon's much the same as someone who owns a Harley is a "biker"

It's my understanding the car needs amber indicators on the back if it has been converted to Right Hand Drive.

If it is Left Hand Drive then the ADR's for that year car apply; in the case of a '71 red would be ok. Once a car is converted to RHD though I wonder if it is illegal to swap the red lights back into it, because technically with red lights it is still conforming to the ADR.

I carry a copy of the relevant ADR section in my glove box just in case; it can be found at http://www.ntc.gov.au/filemedia/Reforms/AustralianVehicleStandardsRules1.pdf and the applicable section is "Rule 104":

There is that odd little standalone sentence at the bottom of this section though that states "Note The ADRs only allow yellow direction indicator lights", but because this seems to contradict everything written above it well who knows what it means....

I'm going to amend the info I put in the post above as I've just been doing a bit more research into it.

The table in the post above is from the "Australian Vehicle Standards Rules 1999" and not the Australian Design Rules.

For Victoria, Vicroads information (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/AFC01553-2574-4520-BE1D-F4F9AA09F300/0/VSI22.pdf) says cars between 1st Jan 1969 and 30th June 1988 are subject to the Second Edition Australian Design Rules.

Excerpt from the Second Edition has indicators covered by ADR 6:

The table below shows that ADR 6 was implemented in January 1973 which is where amber indicators became mandatory:

Before this there was no ADR pertaining to turn signals or turn signal colour, so in effect cars before January 1973 do not have a turn signal ADR applied to them. This means that the excerpt in the post above from the Australian Vehicle Standards Rules 1999 is the defining document that covers our cars. In summary - red indicators are legal.

To confirm that there were no earlier ADR editions before the Second Edition I found the following:

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/index.aspx

Now whether or not the indicator is allowed to be incorporated into the brake light - well that's still a grey area......

I would think it would be a good idea to print out the relevant info from these three documents and carry them around in the glove box just in case.

Steph.
I will try to keep it "nice"
The Law Enforcement Officer will have to put on his glasses.
He was a senior, aged, old fart with no idea.
No disrespect to other senior gentlemen out there.
Yet had the nerve to say to Tony(mi mate) how he has been
in the force for 30 years.
Also hassled him regarding the skinny tyres on the front of the car.
Might just print out the remaining 66 pages of the
Australian Vehicle Standards Rules just to piss him off.
He did say to Tony "This is a nice car and not easily missed.
I will keep an eye out for you".
All Tony was doing was taking his son to kinda.

Yeah, carrying around the paperwork in the glove box is one thing, but I do wonder how a policeman is going to react being lectured on the law by a novice. Hopefully I will never have to find out.
