Hi guys,

This might sound like a stupid question... But what petrol can you run a 1967 mustang on? I know back in the day it would have been super... but seeings as that doesn't exist anymore, is ULP sufficient? or do you need to put an additive into it?

Also can they run on PULP? or is that too rich for the older motors?

Thanks

Hey Joey. I have run my 69 on 95 or 98 without any troubles at all. can use 91 with the additives - but definately no E10 fuel.

I run 98. Would like to know more why we shouldn't use Shell fuels though.

I use Safeway/Caltex Unleaded when ever I can, it runs far smoother compared with when I use Shell.

Do not run shell fuels.

I'm the same - mine's due to a personal choice after a previous vehicle had issues when running shell fuel.  Prefer BP, Mobil, Caltex.

In a past life, my engine builder believed that Shell Fuel fouls the plugs.
I think he's right. We've done a comparison and the Shell plugs were worse for wear.
The engine was a streeter with 10.5:1 comp, nothing too radical.

Something to do with the additives that they use ( or perhaps were using 5 years ago ).

The last time I used Shell fuel (premium) was in an Aussie 351 and I always had sooty deposits coming out of the exhaust so I stopped using it on advice. I've used BP and Caltex 98RON for years now and they run much cleaner.

Shell was always a no no in motorbikes. So I would assume the same thing for cars. When Optimax first came out we were using it in our two strokes and it use to carbon up the top of the piston and the power valve quite quickly.

I think they changed the fuel since then but still it was common that most avoided Shell.

Given what the mustangs are worth I always use 98. BP if I can as my mechanic says it's ok and they are convenient for me

If it runs on standard without pinging just use that. Unless you are sure it has hard valves seats put some Penrite/Nulon valve saver in it,

the higher octane fuels are more refined but as they have different octane levels you need a different tune to suit them the different octane levels changes the fuel burn rate, correctly tuned with higher octane fuels it will go better and if you drive it slow it will last longer but as soon as sink the loud pedal the gauge will drop . the most important thing is not what brand but more important to stay with one brand and get a tune that suits that fuel

I always run mine on Shell V-Power. A few days ago I needed petrol and there was only a Caltex in range. I filled up with Vortex. Now I am having a pinging problem..

I think the trick is to tune to a fuel and stay with that fuel.

Just my 2c worth
