Seriously considering pulling the428 BB out of our 68 fastback(for various reasons and please don't slap me Skulls) and going for a decent Hp/Torque stroker engine. Would we be doing the right thing considering car was not originally a 428 but a 390 2v. And yes the 428 would be up for sale if we do go down this path( and notice Nassi,I said "We", Deb is aware of this)

its your call Ross - but expect to pay around 10k to get something even close to your current torque levels.

I recommend you talk to these guys - I also recommend you go EFI http://www.tandlengines.com/347_stroker.html

the engine code thing only becomes an issue if you sell your car IMO

CHECK you LATER

IF YOUR GOING TO THE MEETING chuck that filter in please - my brain wasn't working last run!!!!

Thanks for the link Shaun, have weighed up the costs of what I'm looking for, with the sale of the 428 going towards it, at this stage if I do sell it , what to ask for it considering the bits heads and internals. The Filter base is still in the boot, will catch you at the next meet                                                                 regards, Ross

http://www.lentechautomatics.com/aodhome.html

http://www.gearvendors.com/prices.html

both of these are recommended by the FE forum guys - one guy i emailed he told me his FE 700hp F150 is running a Gearvendors o/drive and it hooks up fine

Fuel consumption has'nt really been an issue, Ive always accepted the fact that it was going to be fairly high consumption. I am still doing the fors & the againsts at the moment. One issue has always been header clearance, due to the fact its converted to right hand drive and with the power steering box the headers have been beaten to fit , also makes contact which makes for a harsh vibration thru the car. Had not thought much about trans until now , thanks for the link.

Why would you go for a 351/408 type when you  can stroke your 428 to 496 ci.:(

Valid point echo, something that I did give some thought to today, as its already got some good bits there from when it was built by previous owner in 2001(heads, big solid cam, etc), something else for me to consider over the next few weeks

Ross

another couple of ideas

Get a R&P steering unit , Get FPA headers they are designed to fit standard bays with standard steering - i will bring one along next Tuesday to the meeting.

I am not trying dissuade you from your desire to get a new setup , but consider how much better your car will be with these upgrades.

As far as i can see with the engine swap you gain only 2 things
Less weight over the front - great if your a real circle track racer , makes no real difference to the way we drive pour cars.
greater engine accessibility , which you really don't need in my view

down side is the engine bay is going to look really out of whack with the recessed shock towers and tiny little Windsor motor

Okay i'm sorry got a little emotional with the last comment :*:*

Hmmmm maybe just sell the car and buy a Boss ??????????????????????????????

yeah and the boss just saw that:+, and fair call Shaun, how much heavier would the steering be, not a concern for me but if Deb has to get behind the wheel if I've:2:2:2. Don't get me wrong would prefer to keep the 428,if I do take it out to replace steering then I'd proberly take it in for a health check, that way I know exactly what I've got

Go all out, buy a Dart or World Block $4000, Top of the line Scat stroker and Arias pistons $3500 (can buy cheaper if you want) $2500 Heads, $500 manifold, $400 cam, $500 dissy/leads etc, $500 sump, $300 waterpump, $1000 carby, $1000 for machining/balancing, and another $1000 for good luck.
$15k, assemble it yourself, you would have a very light, extremely powerful, 470+ cube Windsor

Get a POWER rack

check this article out from mustang monthly , my choice is Randalls - because they are recommended by ford muscle. But i have a left hook car. $1670 USD for full kit including pumps etc + a bloody big bag from the local markets to take it home !!!!

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techarticles/mump_0612_ford_mustang_power_steering/

i recommend you get a RRS model due to the right hook issues.

http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techarticles/mump_0607_ford_mustang_rack_and_pinion/index.html

make sure you scroll through the pages - they spec every rack available today !!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way mine comes out next month - engine bay and bonnet repaint plus fitting headers etc (might do the recess if Can find a body guy that's reasonable )

Ok, plenty of options to consider,  RRS power rack looks good, although after checking out usa price and aust price, just shows how much we are ripped of here(considering its made here). Thanks for all the input thus far, whatever I do still got to come up with the dollars(anyone want to buy a Nissan X trail)

Ok , after a lot of toying with ideas and IF finances permit, we will be going for a stroker BUT will not sell the 428, this will be put into storage (maybe I could put it in a bubble:+)and freshen up at a later date.Idea is if and when we sell the 68 ,to be able to sell with the 428. As for the stroker, that has come down to 2 options, either T&L engines(USA) as the have a windsor with 510hp but with 530lbs of torque. This also comes down to what our beloved customs is going to sting us when it lands. Other option is O'Brien AMS in victoria offer quite a good 408(cleveland) with 550hp & 480lb torque and so far this company has been very helpful(anyone had any dealings with either, good or bad as I,m putting my balls on the line here)psst: any one want to buy a nissan x trail

Customs is only going to charge you 10% GST on the purchase price, in AU $$$

Dunno why you are looking so far and wide for a replacement motor, anyone can build what you're looking for.

An even cheaper option, freshen up the '28 and run NO2.
Money is made to be spent.

Dunno about cheaper, good nitrous kit, $1000 - $1500 - $1800 with nessesary accessories, then you use 1lb per 100hp per 10 seconds. ie: 150hp shot, about 70 seconds worth.
On the street, as it is illegal, you would want a remote bottle opener, at least, and a stealth system. No polished alloy bottles in the middle of the boot :*
100hp shot wouldn't be worth doing. 200hp shot would be about 50 seconds, but would put a lot of load on your conrods.
About $100 per refill, plus the mucking about to get your bottles filled.

Thats what I'm doing to mine!! 200hp in a 2 stage kit, 100hp on first gear, then another 100hp on second!

Build it yourself. Have the satisfaction of building it yourself. After all, it isn't rocket science. You aren't re-inventing the wheel, or building something out of the ordinary. No special tools required, just a torque wrench, and a magnetic base dial indicator.
Buy a book, that tells you all the nessesary clearances (they should all be done by the machinists anyway).
Simple assembly operation, hardest part is tuning it.
