I think im ready
« on: July 14, 2011, 02:26:28 pm »
I think I’m ready to take the plunge and start looking for my dream car. I’m after a 1965/66 fastback to eventually do my own version of a GT 350R clone. I’ve only got a small budget of $30,000 max to start me off with a base car, something driveable that I can restore slowly in my spare time. I know it’s not much and you can tell me if I’m dreaming.

I dout i will end up doing a true clone with all the expensive shelby bits but i would like to get it looking pretty close to one on the outside with a little bit of my own personal touch.

Tingle, welcome aboard.

This one may be an option. It is in my town so I just spoke to him and it is possibly sold (will know tomorrow). I could have a look for you if you are keen after talking to him and getting all the photos he says he has.

cheers

Dale

That car falls into the category of cheap, possibly too cheap.

Definitely need to check it out first.  Looks good though.

Hi ScottW,

If you look closely at the VIN number, the car in question was originally a 'T' (6 cylinder) converted to a V8.

It may be cheap, however you would need to go right over the car, especially the front end, to make sure that the V8 conversion has been done properly.

My advice, keep looking...

P.S. That 'R' model clone from Western Smash Repairs is awsome!

Here's an 'R' model clone from You Tube - This is as close as it gets...Beautiful!

This seller seems to consistently sell Mustangs at below normal prices, but keeps getting good feedback so it seems they probably are bargains. Might be someone who only makes a couple of grand per sale to have the car move on rather than sticking an extra ten grand profit on it and have it hang around for a year? Here's a nice '69 coupe they just sold which had a buy it now price on it for $12500 - when I saw that one come up I thought it was a fantastic price for what looked like could be a good solid daily driver.

It seems some of the cars are rough but as you say not carrying much in the way of a local markup. I spoke to the guy today and he gave me the impression they were bringing in some cheapies to spread some shipping costs. He spoke pretty well of this fastback, and reckoned it was probably the best value car he had, which is why it is probably sold.

It was a T code, and while it has been changed to 5 stud, he thought the rest is still probably 6 cylinder. It looked quite suitable for a clone project as you could take it where you wanted.

Roger (ANGZ66) looked at one they had a while back and it was pretty rough but was also priced accordingly.

Tingle ,for your budget there are quite a few in OZ for sale.
It seems the price is coming down, the more that come into the country. You wont get much if you import for 30k.
