Any expert welders out there able to explain best way to fill a hole in a panel ?
I am looking at removing the trim from my 64 Galaxie which would leave several holes about 8mm square.

Assuming a MIG welder.

Cheers,
Frank.

I migged a lot of factory holes as part of my engine bay cleanup
I used a bag of mixed size iron flat head nails.

Hold them in place with the head filling the open hole, mig till solid, then grind off the stem.
I did a few at a time before grinding and I had to laugh at one stage cause my engine bay looked like the guy from Hellraiser who had nails coming out of his head...

it does the job quick and easily.

i did every trim hole on my car...... took a while. the idea with the nails is a good one but i was taught to fill large holes in thin sheet by holding a piece of brass on the back of the hole and slowly filling it in. You keep dipping the brass  in water to keep the weld area cool...... and steel doesnt stick to brass.
i found a old large padlock was perfect for the job as i could use the flat on the end or the curve to fit it where i needed it.

is the roof lining out of the car?  the insulation between the roof lining and the roof skin is a great place to start a fire..... if not burn holes in your roof lining...... and drop hot metal straight through your seats....

Thanks Craig.

No, the holes I want to fill in are along the body - mostly in the doors. Easy to get behind those as the doors are off. Not sure about getting behind the front guard - that should be OK. The rear quarter I'll have to check.

Will try both methods and see which is best.

Cheers,
Frank.
