65 mustang daily driver
« on: April 04, 2011, 08:20:55 pm »
Hi all

I am close to purchase an original 1965 A code convertible and am seeking some information..

I have been searching the forum for information and whilst there is bits and pieces I am wondering if i can get the opinion of people that use their vintage mustangs as daily drivers...

Im wondering if people can share the positive and negatives in regards to driving a their mustangs all year round?

thanks in advance

Have done it :thumb:;  But mine was RHD.

Upgraded to electronic ignition (easier starting and a bit more power), H4 headlights(standard ones were pretty poor, upgraded the relays as well) and run decent tyres.  Also used rain-x on the windscreen.
Summer was very hot with black vinyl interior and no AC.  Winter was very cold due to the odd draft here and there.

Just be selective where you park it, as not everyone appreciates your mustang like you do.

Hey Duane
I have a 66 coupe I use nearly daily to commute around 15 miles each way
Ive done similar to  Moe's mods + Im planning intermittent wipers before winter.
Mine is still left hook and I have no plans to swap
Having said that I dont travel in really heavy traffic
on busy days I drive a car with plastic bumpers
all in all I reckon if youve got good toys you should play with them and I rock up at work feeling pretty good with life
cheers
Paul

Duane

Angela got got hers to drive.
2 years on the road 10,000mls as a daily driver and happy with left hook.
I would have prefered less daily driving.

After a little rest in the shed has now been back on the road 18 months and already 12,000mls.
Electronic dizzy great, booster added to the drum brakes great improvement, now convinced Ange to try and avoid wet days.
And I would prefer even less driving.

Prepare your self to park way over the other side of the carpark where nobody parks.

Are you spanner handy? because they are an old car and the usual bits do fail.
That said there is no computer or multiple sensors.

Roger.

with an early covertable definately get the best security tracking system so there'l be no hassals with insurance, which reminds me, check your insurance as well. also do some extra work with the indicator and brake lites. they tend to be a little dull during the day,( and night for that matter.

I would upgrade the tail lights to LED with the amber indicator lense (blkpny has them) so you don't have someone go up your tail because they don't see your brake lights or understand the red flashing brake light is actually a turn signal.
I agree with the H4 headlight upgrade too.

I had a 65 coupe, lhd  as a daily driver, and had no dramas.. upgraded to disc front end on it, had plenty of horsepower to play with, and a 4 speed manual to keep the mind on the job.. certainly made the communte to work ( 25km's) alot more enjoyable.. and the trip home even better!!, upgraded the radiator, and had a thermo fan for those days that the gateway carpark was at its finest... I have 67 vert now, and not driving it every day, but still taking it to work 2-3 days a week...

When we first put Anges on the road I vertually rebuilt the front end.
Didn't want to replace a bit at a time and an alignment in between each.
It needed to be reliable, Ange got used to the heavy brakes without the booster and become accustomed to the difficult driving situations that can arise.

Tie rods inner and outer both sides, upper and lower control arms both sides.
Power steering control valve kit, couldn't get the ram apart so only changed the acordian boot.
New power steering hoses.
New brake cylinders, they looked and worked ok until i rolled the rubber back and found them leaking.
Brake shoes where near new as it arrived.
C4 gear box serviced. checked timing , new oil.
New fan belts.
Replaced the alternator as the diodes were popped.
New windscreen.
New headlihgts.
New Indicator switch mechanism.
Replaced the cracked steering wheel.
Replaced faded tail light lenses and rusty tail light housings.
Minor diff rumble and slight leak was ingnored as they can be like that for years.
New Handbrake cable this one was missing.
Rear spring shackle rubbers and reset.
New lap belts.

On the road..

Had receipts from 1994 ish showing the motor was recoed so I was confident we had a reliable car.
2 years driven daily far and wide.

Things that failed in that time were head light switch, window winder runners, electronic ignition module.
Radiator leak, flushed and resealed.
Fuses and fuse contacts.

The body looked straight with reasonable paint that deteriorated quickly.
Every time it rained the air vents would leak and only got worse.

Good luck,

Roger.
