I had the multi meter on the battery terminals whilst at idle and it read 13.49 volts and a little higher when reved.

What should it be?

If it makes any difference  is in my 68 with a 100 amp alternator.

echo I’m having the same sort of problem with my 65 stang. I have a 100 amp alternator running in it at the moment only I got mine tested at 15.5 volts when it fried the new battery. The alternator & regulator are both new :w

Echo, yours sounds fine. It will probably peak around 14.4V without load. The 100A current capacity shouldn't make a difference to voltage but I'd expect that it would be more stable when you load it up with lights etc.

Ryan, your regulator sounds suspect. 15.5V seems too high. Either replace the reg or get it checked by an auto electrician.

Evan.

Ev is spot on.

14.4v is ideal.    even as low as 13 volts is fine, provided it will deliver the amperage.

Much higher than that, as suggested, your battery will suffer.

Cheers
Jas

Yeee Haaaa.......... I got my you beaut 100 amp chromified alternator working, Considering its suppose to be a 1 wire unit it certinly needed more than 1 wire, but boy does it pull the revs down at idel when the 3 thermoes come in, its 14.5 at Idel and with the thermoes and heater on it goes to 13.6, but its better than the so called reco one the auto sparkie put on, it was a big soft runny heap of poop! (can I say POOP?) Yes POOP with corn!
