12v heated front windscreen
« on: November 04, 2010, 12:14:45 am »
Hi guys,

Anyone know if there is a supplier in Australia that I can get a 12v heated windscreen for a 65 Mustang Tarmac rally car that I am building?

I would like to try to eliminate the need for the heater box and bringing water into the cabin and use a front windscreen that has the heating elements in between the laminated pieces of glass like most modern cars have in rear windows and the V8 supercars all run in their front windscreens...

I've found a supplier in the UK, but if possible I'd much rather source one closer to home as the shipping will no doubt be significant from the UK...

Thanks....Paul

I can't help you, other than to call up your local V8 supercar team and ask, but I'm sure the lines are applied to the inside of the glass, not between the 2 sheets.

While searching on Google came across both your question and also this forum  ! :thumb:

I enjoyed a few years racing in Historics in the late nineties and always dreamed of running a mustang, but reality and obvious cost restraints prevented that ! I and am now building a LMT car for Improved Production in NSW.

My last race was in " Sunny Queenslands Lakeside " but to my dismay it peed down all weekend. Unfortunately while tucked in behind a local driver I thought I’d be safe. Huh …. Went off under Dunlop bridge and damaged my car ( And my ego :smile02: )

While searching for screens a while back, for a friend building the same car as me I decided to have some made.

I have started a business importing Heated Windscreens.

I shall be keeping Mustang screens a little later initially for the 1964 model and to assist the Historic Group NB & NC. Hopefully if there is demand I will carry the later models

I have already been approached by a historic racer in Vic ~ Cobra Motor Sport,

He has a couple of genuine Cobra GT cars and is interested in a few screens, as he competes at many circuits/events throughout the year .... Together with a number on NC Historic cars have requested these too.

Please find details below that may interest you, if you are still looking to purchase within a few months.

Once I have established what models I need I shall be combining with others I require and sending one to the UK as a sample to have made.

........................................

Ok ....

Basically after attending Bathurst support races at the 12 Hr earlier last year, and seeing the demise of so much racing, due to the horrendous rain.

It again re-in-forced the benefit’s of having a heated screen so I looked into the supply again especially for the Evo I'm building as it shares a common screen with the Lancer.

Should have stock of the following within 4 - 5 months depending on demand, however many of these are " being manufactured currently " so should you have any interest my contacts can be found below.

Some of the models in stock:

BMC Minis : 1962 - 1978

BMW :  E30, 1 Series E87

Datsun : 1600 ... Out of stock

Ford : Cortina MK 1 Possibly MK 11

Ford : Escort MK 1 & MK11

Ford : Aust HO / XY Falcon

Ford Mustang : ( Early models only at this stage )

Commodore :  VT - VZ in stock

Holden: HQ ( Seriously ! )

Holden : Torana XU1

Honda : Civic EK

Mazda : RX3 Coupe

Mazda MX5 All models from 1989

Mazda :  RX7 Series 1

Mitsubishi  : Evolution Lancer 1993 - Current ( Models 1-10 )

Nissan : Pulsar GTi-R ( Same as N14 )

Nissan : Skyline GTR 32 & R33

Porsche : 911 1968 – 1989 + 911 Carr Cpe ( 993 )

Subaru : GC8

All screens will come with in green tinted glass, and a distinctive sun band at the top ....

Plain untinted without sun band also available .... These will need to be specially ordered as most drivers like to put their own sponsors name in this area so a Blue sun band may not be required  etc.
Due to current cost restraints I am required to purchases in batches of four as manufacturing procedures dictate these conditions.

These are obviously laminated, using full light green tinted glass with the common heavy top tint band like most screens fitted in Australia. Meeting current European / World standards  They are 4.96 mm thick to meet ADR, have multiple zig zag micro wires up and down with what appears to be one bank / element but is actually two, with a small 4-5 mm gap down the centre.

Although you can see these, visibility is considered normal. Being Internationally E marked ( ECE 43R )so legal for all states ADR ( Not that that matters for racing, however would be suitable for registered cars competing Tarmac Racing type events ).

I'm have engaged respected company trading for many years to manufacture these for me. They are contracted to a number of OEM, plus a number of kit car manufactures for their heated screen supply.

Further .... I requested a number of things from the technical guru within the company to clarify data of the screens i.e. what actual size are the Tungsten Micro Wires in the heating element banks installed in the screens, on each side ( 17 - 22 microns depending on model of car )In say a VT Commadore there are approximately 450 wire Do they go right across the screens to the edges ? very close to the sides Heat up / defrost time in seconds or minutes in adverse conditions ? I'm told something like 2 minutes for full vision if covered in heavy frost / ice

Amps required while in use ? Approx 12.2 amps ( On say an RX7 )
Is a  Relay / Timer required  etc ?

This is one area I am out of my depth understanding wiring, so I am advised the following.

This is up to the individual ....

When installed in current model road going cars ie. Ford, and various other vehicles including the Land Rover series.
Screens are obviously controlled by the factory ECU. So it is advised / recommended to have them fused with a 20 amp fuse.

Interstate delivery can be arranged as I am happy to box / crate screens personally and deliver to depot of your choice in Sydney as I go there twice a week.
Alternatively I can pack and have a courier collect on your behalf.

Insuring the package is your choice and responsibility, but highly recommended to avoid disappointments as I cannot be responsible if damage occurs during transportation.
Having said this, I,m working on a two peice polystyrene cover which will be placed inside a cardboard box.

I may be able to have delivered to certain interstate areas for next to nothing, ( i,e shared costs ) being piggy backed with screens I'm already sending interstate.

Data of element positioning etc, and the general specs can be found in the attachment below.Black lines indicate the main wire layout / design, which surround the screen. This extends to virtually the outside of each screen, thus assuring no edge fogging .... There are two banks one either side with a small gap in-between the two banks of approx 4-5 mm.

The wire on the right side of the drawing is used as the earth strap; the other two are the power supplies. This is only for illustrationpurposes and ususually there are two wires in the lower cornes two for each element.

Here is a quote from their element man, as it may be of interest to those who understand ! ….

Here’s an example of how the touring/racing car screens are made up. The electrical data is ‘per side’, I try to keep the power density to around the 3.5-4.5W/dm2 because any lower and the performance is not so good and any higher and you risk getting a hazy view when in use. This is all dependant on the windscreen in question, size and shape affects it quite a bit.

Drawing / Data :

I'm also onto a US company who manufactures a stick on protective film providing additional life specifically for this application. These I understand can be multi layed and removed when required :thumb:

Conditions of Purchase:

Please note : If I am unable to supply the screens within a given time frame, due to any issues out of my control i.e. strikes or customs hold ups etc, and this genuinely creates a problem for you.

I am happy to return your deposit in full, but with respect if just a change of mind on your behalf happens, your deposit is non re-fundable .... Sorry

However I must stress that “ I'm given a manufacturing time and can only give my word on someone else’s. “

Once your preferred method of payment for the screen has been made ( I’d prefer an EFT if poss ) ….. Kindly advise when a deposit has been made by email, and which payment method has been used, including your reference N’o :

Manufacturing / lead times is 3 - 4 weeks. Plus shipping time to Australia of approx 14 days days.

At this stage I am able to provid a 180 day warranty on the heating elements, however as these are supplied OEM for many vehicles in the UK I would assume the element to have been tested prior to being supplied / installed into new vehicles.

Cost

$535 Plus any internal freight + GST

Deposit required ~ $200 upon ordering of a model " If not in stock "

12v hairdryer works a treat. Just wire into the dash switch and plumb air into original hoses with heater box removed.
