67-70 24 inch Radiator

Guys, got my '69 Mach1 24inch radiator recored a month or so ago but got it done with a 3 row heavy duty core for a cost of $525 rather than a 4-row core for $650. I've now decided (stupid I guess) that I should have spent the extra $125...

Does anyone have either a 24 inch radiator that needs recoring that they want to sell, or have one that needs recoring that they want to keep? I'm happy to get my new radiator core removed and swapped over (the rad shop says no drama) into your rad for half what it cost me last month to get mine done, and I'll get a 4 row core put into mine, or buy yours, recore it and resell it. Either way, let me know if you have one that fits the above description...

Hey Jiffy.

I just happened to drive the Stang to work today. But I dont have a ruler handy. But I went down and my radiator is basically the width of 2 x A4 sheets of paper ... so 600 mm give or take. Which is 24 inches give or take.

It is a small block 302 in a 70. RH top inlet, LH bottom outlet.

If it suitable , and I understand the swap - I would get your newly recored 24" 3 row HD one for $262.50 ?

Cheers,
Frank.

Pretty much - however I need to keep my tanks & side straps as they're original and correct to my car with part numbers and date codes etc. I think the tanks (unless yours is an auto with the trans cooler) are likely to be the same, so it may be as simple as swapping the side straps and getting your one recored with a 4 core with my side straps (which carry the part numbers).

Gimme a call frank and we can discuss it... Cheers
Jeff

Hey Jeff.

Looks like I stuffed around too long with the shipping - that radiator I was looking at is now sold. D'oh !

I think I will see how I go with mine.

Cheers,
Frank.

OK Jeff.

But out of curiosity, the one you had done which is now a 3-row heavy duty. So what is the difference between that and a standard 3-row ?

Given what you said the rows are not any bigger ? Are there more smaller water passages so there is more cooling area ? I thought you had to go to ally to do that ? its copper yeah ?

just wondering.

Cheers,
Frank.

Really?

Personally I don't believe you should spend extra money if it's not needed.

3 core radiators should handle just about any street V8 and many do fine with 2 cores.

What size fan(s) are you running?

What size engine?

If it's overheating are there any cooling problems that you've overlooked?

Is it for a drag strip/racing application or something that would warrant that extra row?

Stephen,

I dont want to really speak for Jeff, but he is building the car in his sig - a 428 CJ. I think he is just building in some insurance. I dont think there are problems with it per se , as I dont think it is built yet !

cheers,
Frank.

Cheers,

Yep a 428 is pretty beefy, not your average street V8.

I am struggling with the same thing, Jiffy wants to keep it as origional as possible me thinks, The tanks and date codes are key,

I have an after market 24" radiator from detroit, michigan, replaced in the 80's. Trying to find a suitable replacement. It's tough to find the right stuff without importing it at ridiculous prices. I don't have the right date codes/origional tanks so am very jealous.

Origionality is the main thing for that sort of build. Feel your pain Jiffy.....
Cheers

Mike

That's correct Digger.

It's about the date codes and the tanks.

I spoke to Jiffy about it - I dont think he posts very frequently.

Cheers,
Frank.

Hi guys = yup, got the original tanks & side straps. I'm amazed that after the hard life & race history in my bomb that the original radiator was there - seems about the only original thing other than the toploader and rust...

The issue is purely visual - the original 3 row core filled the tanks from front to back completely, the new replacement heavy duty 3 row core looks good but there is about a 1cm gap between the front of the core and the edge of the tanks (the side that faces the grille). Probably won't affect it's performance, but just wanted it all to look as original as possible...
