I've had a bit of a search and yeah from 66 onwards they have two wires that attach to the rear of the gauge and the element inside the gauge was so poor it'd often burn out and could be a fire risk; some recommend turning the gauge into voltmeters.

The 65 ammeters have an induction loop within and it picks up current running through a wire that passes through a flat loop at the rear of the gauge.

Just wondering; when they are working; what movement do you see; if at all and when?

If you could grab hold of a stand alone inductive ammeter you could test how much current is running though the loop cable and compare it to the Ford spec (assuming you can look it up somewhere...)
