anyone else seen this
http://www.smh.com.au/national/gillards-cash-for-clunkers-scheme-20100724-10pce.html

I remember something like this happening in the USA a while back.  I can see alot of project cars being scrapped along with the junk that's out there.  The article doesn't say if collector type cars would be spared. What about the original parts cars lost as well.
BTW. what ever happened about the Ford GTHO that was going to be crushed under the 'Hoon' legislation
:omg:

Eligible cars cannot be in the luxury class and would include such models as a Toyota Hybrid Camry, Holden Cruze, Ford Falcon EcoBoost, Toyota Corolla or a Mazda 3. The old vehicles will be scrapped under the scheme to ensure they are not returned to the road.

The Holden Cruze is a regular sort of car, that just happens to be economical, same as corolla, 3 etc. So it's not just for Hybrids etc.

I don't see why the government doesn't make it more appealing to buy local cars, (the Cruze is built here).

I meant Falcon "Ecoboost"
What a lot of crap. If people are driving around in a $2,000 car now, They can't afford a $20,000 to $30,000 plus car.
If it's worth more than $2,000 who is going to own the car or pay the difference?

A lot of people trade EB-EF and VN-VR Falcons and commodores in, on new cars, as well as SV21 camries, and other older stuff, so it would be popular.
So they'd be getting their $500 - $1000 trade in, plus $2000 off the price. The dealer would have to discount less, and the buyer would still be saving money.

It would also bring the price of cars down, as there won't be a steady supply of VR commodores at the cheap yards, for $3000 or so, so the next cheapest thing, will be VT's etc, which is a lot better for the consumer.

Bring it on, I say, the car industry needs anything it can, to remain viable.

I'm sure a '95 Camry and a lot of other '95 models are worth a lot more than $2,000. I cannot see dealers sending even a car worth $5,000 to the crusher and writing of $3,000.
It will also make parts for these older models a lot harder to get.
As usual the Labor party's economics don't add up.
I bet it's a Swan plan!!!

Wayne Swan strikes again.
What about any pre '95 V/8. They are all worth more than $2,000. Are we sure Peter Garrett is not involved?????

Exactly, If the trade in is worth more than the $2000, then the buyer would take the trade in value instead. I doubt a yard would pay more than $2 k for a 95 camry.

:hammer: You are right that it will get alot of crap off the road, more room for us:thumb:
But I thought the $2000 rebate was on top of the trade in value?????  Or is it a 'non-core' promise. Does the Gov. buy the trade? We must be in election mode, I'm being p**sed on and told its rain

Wait until this happens and see how this will distort the car market.

Government subisdizing industry is the worst thing it can do. Also a waste of OUR money.

Generally the owners of these older vehicles can't afford a newer one. But with this carrot dangled in front of them they'll just get into more debt to purchase the "Government picked" car (just what has caused this financial crisis, too much debt).

They need to offer caravan owners a rebate to trade in on a car.  Lets get them off the road. LOL.

Another thing to think about is first time car buyers like "L" and "P" platers, we usually go for old cheap cars. what happens when these options disappear after a few years?  there's going to be a generation with dept at 18 or a generation who get there "L" and "P's" when they get to 20+ and have a decent paying job. and even with the old cars which lye under this level 6 eco scale, there going to increase in price cause they'll be the most economical option...

correct me if i'm wrong, but higher old eco car prices, Dept and/or Bad drivers at +20yrs to me sounds a bit worrying..
