Window track grease
« on: July 02, 2010, 11:36:11 pm »
Just received a kit of rear quarter window tracks winders and brackets that I bought on ebay to replace the fixed quarter window brackets in my '72 with roll down ones.

Question is, what is the best grease to use in the roller slides? I surfed the net with some saying silicon spray, some using lithium based grease, some using something called white grease etc.

In the old days I'd just use a bit of multi-purpose grease which would tend to gum up pretty quickly, but want to do a proper job on this one. Any suggestions?? thanks.

I'd reckon white grease every time. It doesn't seem to be as sticky to airborn stuff yet stays in place longer without breaking down.

Well, I was going to take some pics because I though it might make a good tutorial to help others, but I didn't.

The good news is though that I've only put the drivers side in so far, and hope to put the passenger side parts in sometime in the next month or so. When I do I'm going to make the effort to document it and put it up on this forum. In the mean time I did actually find a website that gave me a basic idea on how to go about it - the pictures aren't very clear and it seems to leave out a few of the fiddly in-between steps, but still quite helpful:

The parts can be gathered individually over ebay, but I was lucky enough to come across a bloke who was selling the complete kit of parts together which I got for $US256, which with postage ended up being about $520 aussie dollars.

I used to use graphite powder in a small squeeze type bottle. Doesn't gum up like grease.
Grease tends to catch all the sh!t & stick, eventually.
