just wondering what pros and cons there are for the v-belt, gilmer drive, and serpentine systems, i have the gilmer drive system atm but cant get it to run right. first it was jumping off, now its chewing belts, should i just go back to the old v belt or go to the serpentine system?

My new stroker has the serpentine belt drive. Looks great ran true on the dyno and does P/S,Alt, W/P and A/C and was really greatly priced.
I have a new Gilmer Belt drive set for sale if anyone wants one $150

What engine is it for, Stormin? If it's 289/302 I'll take it.

Hey Mild67,

I've had a few and never had many issues, but there are a few things to be wary of-

1/ the axis of all pulleys must be parallel, biggest culprit being the alt- don't trust the factory brackets, either. I use March billet brackets/mounts and usually have to space things here and there. Sometimes the water pump pulley needs washers between the pulley and flange. I'm guessing the belt was jumping because it was climbing over the alt pulley sides. These set ups must be spot on-orientation wise. (can be hard to eye-ball while the engine is in the car)

2/ I'd say if you're shredding belts the tension is too much. Like I mentioned above, if everything is lined up right, then just screw the tensioner bar/adjust the alt out with just enough weight on it. How much is just enough? Feel/flex the belt on the bottom span and you should move it about 12mm. Run the engine and note the pitch or noise. Too loose will create a kind of vibration, nip it up (turn it off first) in small steps until it sounds just like a blower whine. Normally, the 'loudness' fades the tighter it gets.

Lastly, remember these belts have tremendous 'bite' and you're only driving an alt and water pump, so let the teeth do the work not the belt strain. These setups don't work on the same principals as V or serpantine belts.

Can you post some pics taken fron each side?

Hope this helps-

Cheers
Layne

iv got it all in pieces at the moment and waiting on a march bracket and new water pump before i reassemble and give it another go, also i brought a cheap 130amp chrome alt and the alloy is very soft and maybe flexing a little.

What's the serpentine system?
I need to look at pulleys for mine - I'll be using P/S and Aircon.

What's the serpentine system?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpentine_belt
A serpentine belt (also known as a multi-vee or multi-rib belt) is a single, continuous belt used to drive multiple peripheral devices in an automotive engine, such as an alternator, power steering pump, water pump, A/C compressor, air pump, etc. The belt may also be guided by an idler pulley and/or a belt tensioner  (which may be spring loaded, hydraulic, or manual). The serpentine belt was invented by Jim Vance while working for the Gates Rubber Company and first used by Ford Motor Company for the 1979 Mustang.

Yep.. did some searching on it.
Stormin sent the details on his, but can't justify that kind of money for a set of pulleys.
Standard ones will have to do :+

Indeed I did!
That's not so bad. I'll have to price up my aircon unit without compressor to see how much that saves me.
