I have a C4 auto problem and am looking for some more insight. I know there are a ton of questions and answers surrounding this, I am just asking for the best way to proceed & next steps from people who have been there and done that?

Problem:

1. 2-3rd gear flare - yes, super common.
2. When cold it flares, not when warm or not noticeable.
3. If I accelerate solidly and it kicks down it doesn't appear to slip but if it's a gentle acceleration and it kicks down it happens.

Steps taken so far:

1. New vac modulator & turned the vac modulator first 1turn then 1.5 turns.
2. New rubber hose to intake manifold pipe.
3. New filter screen.
4. New pan gasket (it had a small leak).
5. Drain and refill with fresh fluid (Penrite type F).
7. Tighten intermediate band to spec.

No changes in flare after trying the above.

Other suggestions to try moving forward - remove and clean valve body, new servo's or remove and clean existing, add a product called lube guard which supposedly frees sticky servos or a complete rebuild - if this is the best/final option, can anyone suggest a genuinely reputable shop that can do this in Sydney?

Thank you to any and all advice.

Anyone live in Sydney that can recommend a shop?

I would try adding 500ml to one extra litre of tranny fluid.

If that does not fix the problem tranny my need a rebuild.

Replacing O rings and friction discs.  :thumb:

Hi 6t9m1,

Thanks for replying. Tried adding a little extra but no effect, another forum suggested try a little less oil due to expansion of fluid (keep the fluid within range though). Going to tighten the band a little as suggested by Tony and see how that goes. Thanks for the callout Aussie-67.

Google says:

If you are having a flare between second and third the usual causes are hard seals on the intermediate servo or a worn direct clutch or hard direct clutch seals. If the servo is not the issue you will need to remove the trans and have it overhauled.
