Title: Hellllp!!! (with rust repairs)
Post by: mozzmuzz on December 21, 2010, 06:41:53 pm
Hi fellow Mustangers.  I recently had the misfortune (or maybe good fortune) to have the heater core leak on my 65 f/back.  Pulled the heater out to find that the cowl area actually looks pretty good from under the dash. (no holes...yet).  Upon further inspection I noticed that there is some rust around the top of the cowl along the edge where the water is suppose to come out.  There is also a small area at the base of the windscreen on both sides.  My plan is to whip the guards off and maybe have the windscreen taken out to see how hard it is going to be to repair. I've also got a rusty patch in the d/side toe board.

I'm pretty happy to have a go at cutting out the rust around the cowl with my trusty Dremmel (don't want to attack it with a grinder) but I wouldn't mind having someone who has done this type of repair have a look at it before I start.

I would also like it if someone could weld the new metal back in for me.  I'm happy to pull everything to bits but I'm not in a position to strip the thing down to a shell and embark on a full re build.  Is there anyone out there who would be willing to have a look at it for me??  I'm in Bassendean (Perth) PS> After Xmas of course.  Cheers.

Try searching the forum using the word "cowl"

You will find a good few threads which generally discuss this item.  One of the members in some threads is no longer with us but his knowledge was invaluable.

You might find this thread relevant also (if not generally helpful):

Your grinder with a 1mm blade and a wire brush is your best friend.
Your Dremel is just pissing into the wind.
Dont be afraid...... its only metal.
Rust is like cancer , u gotta get rid of it all or it will come back..... sooner than u think.

Follow this link & have a look in the Heven 67 album. There is pics of the process on a 67 coupe. Weather this method will suit your application depends on where & how badly your car is rusted. Post a few pics & we should be able to advise a bit better.

The "speed hump" replies :giggle: have been moved to their own thread here http://mustang.org.au/forum/viewthread.php?tid=13185.

Now I got to go buy a new pair of glasses after reading that.  Mine cracked.
