Rear facing open bonnet scoop
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:07:19 am »
Is a rear facing bonnet scoop legal or not. It opens on the windscreen side the same as I belive a factory A9X Torana would. I have been told by some people its ok as the A9X had one and by others that the pits will not pass a rear opening????
The scoop height is legal so thats not an issue.

I doubt if anyone would notice, there are plenty of bonnets, on diff makes of cars, that can "vent" towards the windshield, so I really do not see any issue.

With scoops they care mostly about a danger to pedestrians if you hit them, so there are height restrictions etc.
I don't see a rear facing scoop being a problem for rego because the "dangerous" part faces backwards anyway, and they are low at the front.

The problem lies in the fact that they are very ugly :+

Although the one in your avatar doesn't look too bad.

the only legal issues with bonnet scoops is the opening size (so you put mesh over it, like a shaker has), height, and it cannot be connected to the engine, unless it is factory. So shakers are legal, bug catchers are not. at least, that was the case when I looked, in VIC.
I also think you may be subject to ADR's for reflective material, on ADR affected cars.

When I read the regs for Victoria some time ago, they were illegal if over the radius of a tennis ball (half the height) - I think the measurement is 2 inches - UNLESS factory fitted on that year of generic model - so any Mustang, but not a Fairlane scoop on a Mustang for instance....

If you read what VicRoads put out you'll know the rules.

Try

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/CC48FC10-4D57-4F04-82E1-3BD72EF88340/0/VSI8.pdf

This will explain it all, basically you are allowed 4000mm sq of intake which is an option allowed by the manufacturer and you must be able to see the road 11 metres ahead.   Rear opened scoops are not allowed as they can allow engine oil to spill onto the windscreen.  I hope that helps.

Where does it say anything specific about rear facing scoops? The pic shows one, with a Pass...

Yeah, gotta agree there... The closest it comes to reference front / rear facing is that (the way I interpret the writing) there shall be "no single opening greater than 65mm circle" - diameter I presume - facing the front of the vehicle. Doesn't actually say that it can't face rearward - with that said it was only section 14 that I read and couldn't find any other obvious reference in the document.
Cheers,
Mike

I've heard it before that rear facing scoops are not allowed but after reading that document there isnt anything that indicates they are illegal ;w

There is even a diagram of a rear facing scoop that is defined as a "pass" infact according to how they harp on about potential of causing injury to persons, smooth edges from front and sides, proper radii etc it sounds like they would be considered safer than forward facing scoops.

The opening size rule is to prevent injury I guess, in an accident. But if you put some flimsy mesh over the hole, now the openings are tiny....
But it is OK for a Huge lower opening for the radiator etc...

Have a read of the Vehicle standards and that should clear it up for you.  Would be similar thing in the States, rear rubber across the bacl of the bonnet to stop oil spills onto the bonnet.  Even shakers have a seal to prevent this.

A rear facing scoop is allowed if it passes the roll point test for height and is not open.  This is only for looks as they were in the A9X's, big bonnet holes weren't allowed.

Your nearest VicRoads office should be able to give you the rundown and any pamphlets.

The A9X and XC Cobra didn't have bonnet holes under the scoop?
Could you seal the carby to the bonnet, and have it open?

Thanks ever one.

Foresight I will try that test and see if it passes.
I was thinking my self rather than fiber glass up the back of the bonnet put some gauze like mesh there and see if that would pass, so guys I will go with that idea and see how we go if it needs closing up. I would like to keep the air flow if I can as I will be trying to get max hp from the motor. I cant close up around the air filter as I would need a panel to cover the whole engine bay and I know the pits don't like that and its too involved for the sake of keeping the back open.

It is very easy, unless someone has cut the hole in the bonnet too big. Use a chrome aircleaner dropdown base, and run foam around the edge, to seal it to the bonnet, when it's closed, with either a smaller air cleaner in the middle, or no aircleaner, if at the track.

How much additional height does an Elenaor hood give?

I suppose I should add its not a scoop as such the bonnet is one piece fiber glass so it wasn't cut and a scoop added its just one piece. The manifold at the moment is an Elderbrock Preformer with a small spacer and a 60mm total height air cleaner on it with close to another 60mm of space between the top of the air cleaner and the bottom of the hood. I had a look at the tennis ball test and it would probably swallow the tennis ball. I will check later to see if I can see the road 11meters in front of me but that will depend on the drivers height and I am tall so might be ok for me but not others. I think I will try the mesh and see what they say. The lip is on quite an angle so they might like that fact as it has no sharp edges and with mesh would from the car probably look like its closed up.

I don't think mine would be higher than an Elenaor hood its a 2 1/2inch cowl hood.
And as said before only at the windscreen and so that roll test only applies to the front of the scoop so as circled it would pass easily on that point and I think 70-75mm is the max height of a scoop in WA so might scrape in with that. :(
