STROKED V'S SUPERCHARGED 289 4V
« on: January 30, 2010, 03:44:01 pm »
:f     LOOKING FOR ADVICE =  I have a good strong 289 4v (1966) that is ready for a freshen up and am divided between a 347 stroker kit  or a  Paxton supercharger  kit   (both around $3500-) Which would give me the greatest  horse power per $ spent ? Any ideas . . . . .

The supercharger will give the best drivability, and the best fuel economy, of the 2 options.
We drove a VN Group A (Original, not a mock up) with a 348ci holden motor, and the group A top en, with centrifical blower on it. Running the factory ECU, from Southern Melbourne, to Canberra, did the shopping, went to scruiteneering (Summernats) and then to the Summernats, with a boot load of crap, and 2 people.
It averaged 8.1l per 100k's, and did it on less than 1 tank of fuel. With the same tune, it made 684hp at the tyres, on the Summernats dyno, and came 3rd in Horsepower Hero's, then we drove it home again.
It ended up making 506rwkw, over the next year, before it was sold.
Drives like a kitten on the road, until you open it up.....

Hey Steph,

You are getting slack.
You took 10 full minutes to answer a technical question about motors.

Whats the world coming to?

I think you would have trouble getting a Paxton and installing it for $3500, I would add a couple of G to that to get a good product.  I thought the same before I put a Paxton on mine.  I would stroke it with a low compression and then maybe put a supercharger on later

Sorry John, I was thinking of poo jokes for the other thread....

$3500 installed and running well, would be a pretty standard stroker kit, not really ready for a blower. And a $3500 blower, on your original, standard motor.....

I'm leaning to putting TWIN Paxtons on mine....if they still make em....then again it might be twin fuel cells :w

If its "good and strong" why the freshen up?

Is the 3.5k the total spend or is it for the paxton/stroker kit?

Yes, you can buy Twin Paxtons from the USA/Ebay Motors from a mob called "cundnracing,,". I think they want about $4.1kUSD plus shipping etc...See link below

I believe they sell the single Paxton for $3.5k USD plus shipping...

They will only fit 260-302 ( will not fit the 351W ).

Has anyone here ever fitted a single PSC to a 351W in a 66 Fastback?

What heads are you intending to run?   In my view, this is the critical choice when you are looking for power gains. Then consider the other two options.

Why would you run 2 low quality blowers when you could run 1 good one, and make more power, for the same boost?

I know a few guys who've tried twin 6/71 blowers, and it is tricky to set up right.

Hey BLKPNY,
Been tossing up changing my original GT390 heads for edlebrock performer heads with 428 valves.
On the Fe forum, the heads are the biggest hold back for my motor, and the most advisable upgrade.
But recent advice has questioned whether the bottom end will handle the upgrade?
What do you think?

I can honestly say, I don't know much about them, except they aren't real strong.

The car we are sponsoring, the 69 390 Fastback that Performance Fords is building, has pulled the FE and dropped in a Windsor, to make more power.

I would speak to someone with the runs on the board, and use their complete package. The bottom end will be able to be beefed up a little, but not heaps.
