sequential tail lights and the law
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:03:49 pm »
I bought a 65 fastback from the US and am working towards getting the car ready for the pits. I love my tail lights but have been told that they are probably not allowed in WA.
Is that correct and what would this be like for a fix if so.

What do most people do to pass the pits with this problem???

Can't see a problem with them, and not sure if the law will have a problem.

In my opinion, just leave them in and leave it up to the guys at the pits.

My 66 was passed with tailights in std US spec, no changes at all.  Just had to change headlights and front indicator lenses changed to clear

Manufacturer: Scott Drake Enterprises

1964 - 1966 Ford Mustang LED Tail Lights
These LED Tail Lamps Feature Both Large And Small LEDs For A Unique Look. Each Bank Of LEDs Are Independent To Make A Distinction Between Tail Light And Brake / Turn Signal Lights.

So its possibly just the yellow lenses that will be the problem then.

It will be a matter of rule/law interpretation by the person on the day inspecting.

I looked up the writings in the Australian Vehicle Standards Rules in relation to having red rear indicators (which states they can be yellow or red for vehicles built prior to July 1973) in case a traffic officer was not quite well versed in the rulings.

The part of the vehicle standards that you may have trouble with is Part 8, Div 11, Rule 104, section (1)(d):

"flash at the same time and rate as any other direction indicator lights on the same side of the vehicle"

So I guess it could be argued by a real anal inspector that sequential don't flash the same as the front indicators (since there's only one light at the front, instead of the 3 panels at the back).

Earlier in that section it talks about the minimum flash rate being 60, with a maximum of 120.  Would the new flasher module with the sequential change, ie slow, the flash rate of the front indicators?  I don't know much about the actual components of these indicators.

In my opinion this will be another one of those things where you get one answer from someone, and the complete opposite from someone else. :[

Sorry, I don't know anything about the Scott Drake ones, if they were ours (Mustang Project) i could have sorted it for you.

Did you buy them, or were you told they were Scott Drake?

Technically they can be flashing at the same time and rate as the fronts - only that it is a different panel everytime.

You should get away with it - I think in Vic you would not surte about WA.

Do my old trick and book the last appointment Friday arvo.  :+

Cheers,
Frank.

But when conveted (when new) back in the 60's they were taken out & standard flashers put in their place. They were illegal then, maybe still now. Most got reinstalled after the pit inspection of the day.

However once registered, I do not believe that it would cause any grief from the law unless the driver was doing something totally stupid.

If they were Mustang Project LED's, I could just set him up with a reprogrammed flasher unit, for the Road Worthy, which is why I am trying to make sure he is sure they are Scott Drake.

Mustang Project were the first to bring Sequential LED's to the Mustang market.
If you took a pic of the circuit board, I coult tell you if they were ours or not.
If they are ours, a Non Seqential LED flasher from us will convert them to normal operation, while it's getting checked.
