i have a 70 mustang and was checking the wheel alignment and found that i had virtually 0 caster ,from different posts it is recommended to have around 2 degrees positive caster my question is with original front end is it possible to get this with the caster rod adjustment bar and will it stress the lower control arm

I don't know the answer to your question or where in Victoria you are but if (and when at the moment) you can get there there's only one place to go for alignment of these old girls.

Rob Tuckett is a MOCA member and classic Mustang racer and knows more than anyone about this. I had my '66 down there for new tyres and a severe alignment issue. He transformed the car.

thanks Geoff I'm in lysterfield melb and i plan to take it to hastings later this year ,, i was trying to understand the caster aspect on my car as the caster rods push or pull according to setting on the hinged lower control arm

You are correct with the need to have neg caster, between -2 and -4 will give nice steering feel.
The caster bar can pull this (basically you need to have the lower arm forward from the top arm), not sure how you checked it yourself, unelss you have a setup at home?

Best to get it to the guys that can do the adjustment, as it will effect everything and it's important to keep the camber correct also.
I was out of adjustment with my 67 (similar to the 70), so when I was replacing the top pivot hardware adjusted the top arm before bolting it to the body and got my caster back to -2.5 once I took it back to the alignment shop.
Bit more work but that's the fix if they can't get anymore caster out of it.

If you have power steering ask for as much neg caster as they can put in it, it will track better.
If manual steer no more than 2deg it just makes the steering too heavy.
They can add caster by adjusting strut rods and adding shims.
